2012 predictions

This is why I added the 'at the time' clause to my view, as its quite clear that people change over time.

Schumacher is a good example. The public image of him that I got when he was at Beneton and then Ferrari winning titles was one of, quite frankly, a bit of a ruthless ****. I never liked him and I don't think many of the drivers did either.

But then this time around he has come across as a completely changed man. He seems really likeable and much more laid back. Could you imagine the Ferrari Schumacher doing the whole Stig thing on Top Gear, for example? But then on the flip side, he isn't showing the same ruthless characteristics on track either...

Swings, roundabouts, all sorts. But it does seem that there is a bit of a trend between being successful and being a git :D

He was ruthless with Barrichello in 2010.
In 2011, he was ruthless with Hamilton at Monza (was it?). He let Button by without a hitch but Hamilton - no way would he let him pass, until he was given a veiled radio communication by Brawn that he was breaking the rules.

Personally, I think he just wanted to teach Hamilton a lesson. He had already raced with Button in previous years, but Hamilton was a new customer, so he had to be taught a lesson. Nothing wrong with that of course and I'm sure Hamilton understands.

Hmm.. Barrichello in 2010, ruthlessness, or just desperation?

Hamilton at Monza was good driving combined with pushing the rules to the limit.

Still only 1 incident a year since his return. He has definitely chilled a bit on and around the track from his earlier days.

He has chilled out, but isn't of the same calibre as he once was.
If those skillz magically returned, my guess would be that this ruthless attitude would also return.

In any case, there are many other instances of drivers not coming as across as "nice" and being the best at what they do.

And whose to say that Hamilton or Alonso aren't "nice"?

Yeah its not about what people are actually like, because none of us will ever know, its about how they come across through the media and through their driving.

I've no doubt that if the Merc magically jumped to the front of the field Schumacher would be practically breaking Rosbergs legs to make sure he stayed in front :D

But bringing it all back round to the start of this; Vettel getting a bit pee'd off with Narain and seeming a bit stroppy in the media following 1 poor result doesn't suddenly strip him of his skills and abilities as a driver. If anything it shows a strengthening desire to win.

How many incidents per year prior to his return?

2006 for example?

I remember a long long long time ago, when Senna and Mansell were racing.
What Murray Walker said is that for a top line driver, 1 incident (of which the driver is at fault), is permitted, per 16 race season.

I think MSc was in-line with that error rate.

This is what makes Hamilton's 2011 error-strewn season so bizarre.

If anything it shows a strengthening desire to win.

In 2011, Nuts stated that after having a decent result (I think it was 2nd place at Canada last year), Vettel was livid with himself. At the time of course, Vettel was far far far ahead of everybody in the title race.
Most drivers would've been happy to be in that position, but Vettel wasn't.

The guy wants to win at all costs.
But to be the best, that's what it takes.

Yep. Pretty much the key point.

So to get annoyed at not doing well doesn't suddenly mean he is no longer the best. Especially after only 2 races, one of which was rather topsy turvy anyway.
