2013 Athletics Thread

even the streets were empty for the women's marathon. must be hugely disappointing for the athletes. :/ roll on london 2017. you know that will packed to the rafters again. :D

did anyone watch the paralympic world championships in lyon a few weeks back on more4? it looked like they'd erected a few seating stands in an open park. anyone could have wandered in. :p

Had my fingers crossed for a sudden Justin Gatlin bout of DEATH half way down the straight. What a joke....

Was absolutely disgusted at the womens 10000m, Dibaba did not even shake the hand of Niya. She done all the work for her and took the race out and showed some balls, and the inevitable happened, but she didn't even congratulate or shake the womans hand. Pretty horrific and cut throat from the "greatest", got her medal as we expected but didn't exactly do the work for it.

Awesome picture ..even mother nature paying Bolt a compliment:p

Good race from Bolt, simply unbeatable at the moment..wasnt as fast as i thought he would go but then it was lashing down with rain.

Saturday i was in hospital to get some injections put in my foot, as its been giving me some grief so spent most of the day watching the womens marathon and the streets were empty :/..in fact most of the stadium has been empty.

Good to see Mo finally win and get the WC title under his belt.

Christine Ohuruogu wins the gold medal in the 400m final for women...lol @ Montsho leaning back thinking she had won the race only for Christine to snatch the win:p...what a mistake to make :/

Been some good events and results so far, the stadium has been shockingly short of people though though, especially for the morning sessions.

Couldn't believe Ohurogu won it last night, Montsho must be kicking herself... Great job by Christine though, was quite the finish :)

Niya didnt do that work "for" Dibaba. Niya attempted to "break" Dibaba, but it didnt work. Niya knew she couldn't out-sprint Dibaba, so wanted to make a run for home, from a long way away. It was a high risk strategy that didnt work on this occasion. This is the same reason why nobody wants to take the fight to Mo Farah, because they are worried that they will end up doing all the work, they won't break him and he will out sprint them in the final 200m.

Dibaba is arguably the best long distance athlete over the last few years.

And what about Shelley Ann Fraser. She was brilliant.

She did do the work for Dibaba. If she didn't take the race up, someone else would have. Dibaba might have even had to do it for herself and set a pace. I see what you are saying but Niya took up unofficial pacemaking duties and was disposed of. Easy win.

This logic not applicable to Mo, there was multiple 26:4X guys in that 10000 who if took it out fast would test him but again, nobody did. I think you will see something different in the 5000 with teh guys in that because there are East African's in that race who will and can take it out and who also have a good kick. I of course want Mo to win but I do want to see him tested and see how he kicks off a fast pace.

Is Mo Farah the greatest Brit Athlete of all time?
I'm trying to think of anyone on the same level.

Colin Jackson
Jonathan Edwards
Linford Christie
Sally Gunnel
Steve Cram
Seb Coe

Personally, for me, a World Record is absolutely essential to be classified as the greatest. Perhaps Farah will get a World Record at some point, but he doesn't have this yet.

What do you guys think?

bloody hell... adam gemili just ran the 200m in 19.98 - only the 2nd brit to break 20 seconds. not bad at all. :p

It is certainly impressive. And the main thing is that he scored a PB.

I'm not sure if we should be getting too excited, though, given that the British Record held by J.Regis was set in 1994 - 19 years ago!!!

The fact that after 19 yrs ago, for all the advanced training techniques, supplements, lottery funding, etc, we still cant go faster than Regis ran 19 years ago, is a little underwhelming.

The same goes for 100m running. Linford Christie was so far ahead of everybody else in Britain, his record of 9.87s looks set to stay for the foreseeable future.
