2013 IndyCar Series / Mazda Road to Indy discussion

Indycar Series Round 9 of 19: Milwaukee IndyFest

Venue: Milwaukee Mile, West Allis, WI
Track length: 1.015 miles
Layout: Quad oval, 9.25 degree corner banking
Race length: 250 laps (253.75 miles)
Lap record: 20.028s/185.5 mph (Patrick Carpentier, Reynard 98i-Mercedes, 1998)

Overview: The Milwaukee Mile has a long and storied history, having first hosted powered vehicles in 1903 - making it the oldest motor speedway in the world. Racing legends such as Jim Clark, Mario Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi all competed here, with Clark being the first to win in US open wheel racing with a rear-engined car in 1963. Indycar (then sanctioned by AAA) first added the track to its 1937 schedule, and subsequent races have been held every year since, with the exception a 4-year hiatus during World War 2 and 2010. Indy Lights will be hosting its 5th round of 2013 at Milwaukee.

Indycar Series Round 11 of 19: Pocono Indycar 400 presented by Sunoco

2z7raq0.jpg

Venue: Pocono Raceway, Long Pond, PA
Track length: 2.5 miles
Layout: Triangle
Banking: Turn 1 - 14 degrees, Turn 2 - 8 degrees, Turn 3 - 6 degrees
Race length: 160 laps (400 miles)
Lap record: 42.51s (Emerson Fittipaldi, Penske PC-18/Chevrolet, 1989)

Overview: Pocono Raceway opened in 1971 and differed from existing oval-type tracks in its three unique turns with varied banking. Indycar under CART sanction ran a 500 mile race at Pocono until 1989, as part of the 'Triple Crown' of ovals offering bonus prize money in recognition of the difficulty of winning the award. Emerson Fittipaldi holds the current race lap record at 211.715mph. Pocono returns to the Indycar calendar in 2013 as a 400 mile event, but retaining Triple Crown status along with Indianapolis and Fontana. The track also hosts Indy Lights, ARCA, Nascar Truck series and Nascar Sprint Cup races.

Great result for Ganassi, 1, 2, 3.

I quite like that track for an oval seems pretty good... I like when they said that some of the corners are taken after other race tracks.

Felt sorry for Marco Andretti, third race in a row something happens outside his control to take him out of contention. Hinchcliffe seems to be emulating Paul Tracy's 1993 season (crash or win), and Sato turned back to his kamikaze self (costing Hunter-Reay in the championship hunt).

Quite the weekend for Scott Dixon and a weekend to forget for Will Power.

Yup. Dixon is always strong at Mid-Ohio, so he's looking good for a potential third championship.

Was glad they got the standing start sorted for the second race

No first lap collisions either. Can you imagine Grosjean and Maldonado going 3-4 wide with the field in Toronto? They'd never make it a full lap :p

Shame about the backmarkers triggering the late yellows, was looking good for a 100% green flag run. Still cleaner than Monaco though ;)

was a bit disappointed they went for a rolling start on the first.

It was defined before the race (as per the article I linked on the 10th: http://www.indycar.com/News/2013/07/7-9-Standing-starts-upedate-for-Toronto). Unfortunate that Newgarden had an engine problem.

Yea Dixon has really moved forward now, will be interesting to see if he can reel in Castroneves.

I wouldn't count out Ryan Hunter-Reay just yet, although he has made some crucial mistakes in the last few races.

When they explained about the switch to the rolling start it made sense was still a bit disappointing after the big build up but we got a standing start in race 2 so can't complain :)

There was mixed response to it from what I can tell. I'd prefer single file rolling starts on street\road courses, it's easier to maintain formation and spot drivers jumping the start.
