2013 - Morba's Cake fed Strongman Log.

Events:
Due to people turning up late and also not bringing suitable cars we ended up with an hour to train only. Pants.

Yoke, all 20m (10m drop and turn):
50kg
150kg
150kg
250kg
250kg
210kg
210kg
210kg

And that's that.

Quick session on my own. Gym was a state, people hadn't tidied up after sat so I didnt have much room. Decided to do more front squats!

bar x 10

100x5
120x2
140x1
150x1 - PB, think 140 was as well, will need to check pb thread.
150x1

Happy with that, will keep up with these, I think they will have a good carry over for stones.

Quick overhead session

60x10
80x10
90x8
80x8
80x8
80x8

Done.

Thoughts:
Shoes still feel tight and as much as i can feel myself in a better position they are making me press differently which is detrimental to the amount I am pressing at the moment.
It feels better though and my knees aren't screaming at me as much which is a good thing, so will persevere :)
I clean the log a lot better with my new belt and the shoes, thats much better now.

Additionally my bicep felt ok last night, yay!

Deads:

Warmups

Deficit, about 3":
60x10
60x10
100x10
100x10
140x5
140x5
180x5

Normal deads:
230x3
250x1
260x1 - recent PB. I thought this was slow but was told it was pretty good.
220x8

BORs
100kg 4x8

Thoughts:
I like doing my early sets off a deficit, I think we all found a benefit in that :)

Wast gonna go for 260, was gonna do a few singles at 250 but it went up easy enough so gave it a go. Sweet.
Rows thrown in at the end, easy enough, just wanted to get a pump on :)

overhead:
feeling like crap after a weekend away for a wedding.

log
70x10 (5 strict, 5 pp)
70x10 (5 strict, 5 pp)
80x10 (5 strict, 5 pp)
80x10 (5 strict, 5 pp)
90x5 strict
90x5 pp
100x3 strict
all pp from now
100x5
110x2
110x2
110x2
115x1
110x3
100x5
90x8

some one motions 100kg x 5 singles.

bench - just some quick bench
60x10
60x10
110x5
130x5
150x5

then we had some spare time so.....

45kg db snatch x 5

and then
40kg axle 1 arm snatch x lots

then...

40kg axle 1 arm snatch into 1 arm strict press

Thoughts:
log pp was pathetic, almost everything was strict. While my shoes are putting me in a better position the height of the heel is still taking time to get used to. It is detrimental to my max but i can see that it is beneficial. Hoping its not a change that ruins my log for the comp!

1 motions with my new belt feel awesome, 100kg flew up as the log started in a much better position, well happy with that.

axle snatch and strict press was hard as hell as had to twist the axle to get it into a position to press it. Hard work but fun lol

1 : 100kg log for reps 60 secs (floor to overhead each rep)
2 : 100kg farmers 20 metres 60 secs
3 : Oly bar deadlift 220kg for reps 60 secs
4 : Super Yoke 260kg 20 metres 60 secs
5 : Arm over Arm 4x4 Mazda 20 metres 60 secs

Deads:

Feeling like crap today. My boy being sick and my wife suffering from the other end. Clearly some bugs around at home at the moment :(

warmups
deficit deads off 4" or so:
70x10
70x10
110x10
150x8
190x5
210x3

17" block pulls (stupid height tbh!)
230x10
250x5
270x4
270x4
270x4
290x1

Incline log bench
70x10
90x10
90x10
110x10
120x5
120x1 (umm, tricep on fire for some reason!)
110x5
110x5
110x5
110x5
90x10
90x8

Thoughts:

After the deficits I really wasn't liking pulling from the floor, we all struggled except for Tom who pulled 260kg doh for a very tasty pb (he can do 305kg mixed), so joined one of the others pulling from a different height.
17" seems a silly place to start but he really struggles on lock out so it makes sense for him. Nothing really felt hard here, could have pulled over 300, really shows that my problem is off the floor, if it gets to my knee I wont drop it i'm sure!

had some time after packing up so did a touch more pressing, not done log bench in a while so it was nice to do it again as an addition to normal pressing :)

Skwaatts

warm ups
60kgx10
60x10
100x10
140x5
180x3
180x3
180x3
200x1
210x1 - New all time PB!
dropset:
140x8
100x7
60x9

yoke pickups - done with my normal yoke stance and height:
210x5
290x3
350x3

Thoughts:
Over the moon with squats, all were good depth tonight apparently. Helps by having a couple of monster squatters with us tbh!
Had the bar a bit further down my back and had my oly shoes on (i know, odd combination) and all felt good including my knees. No doubt my shoes are compensating for some spastication in my hips / legs / ankles!

Yoke pick ups - not really done these before so happy with what I did tbh.

Last event session before the comp this sunday, so we will be doing a run through of all the events (for mine and the others comps). Should give me a basic idea of how I can expect to do at the comp proper!

1 : 100kg log for reps 60 secs (floor to overhead each rep)
2 : 100kg farmers 20 metres 60 secs
3 : Oly bar deadlift 220kg for reps 60 secs
4 : Super Yoke 260kg 20 metres 60 secs
5 : Arm over Arm 4x4 Mazda 20 metres 60 secs
These look like pretty good events for you, surely?

I'd live to have a play arm over arming a vehicle of some kind, looks badass!

Yeah I hope so. Yoke is my worst event out of the lot and it's all on grass so that will play a huge factor I think.

Arm over arm is great if the rope is good, really screws your arms and back!

Glad there's no loading event but shame there isn't stones :(

last events session before comp:

was hoping for a comp run through but spent saturday flying a 3m sport kite which killed me after squats on fri (plus loads of walking!)

farmers (15m drop and turn):
60kgx30m
100kgx30m
120kgx30m - felt good, heavier than comp weight

yoke (15m drop and turn):
50kgx30m
130kgx30m
210kgx30m - this killed me, it sat right on my scabs from squatting so gave up here.

log:
couldnt clean 70kg, tricep in agony.

game over.

thoughts
farmers was good, lower pickup than what we will have at comp im sure.
yoke was pathetic as in agony
log was screwed by us having a go on the punch machine in the gym. I knew i shouldnt have done it but did and straight after throwing one punch my tricep tendons were on fire.
Tried to clean 70kg log and couldnt, hurt too much. Idiot.

time to rest up, stretch and roll for 5 days. Will pop to gym for a few hours on tues n thurs just to warm up and go through the motions.

nervous as hell.

quick comp write up:

100kg log for reps: 5 reps, joint 2nd
Windy as hell this morning, wind coming off the thames into my back. As soon as the log left my chest you could feel the wind take it.
3 one motions which were quick enough to not be affected by the wind but I wasnt gonna get any more than that so had to try and push press.

100kg farmers walk 20 metres: 4th I think
turns out these were 115kg each hand, not 100kg. When I picked them up before comp started I said "these feel more like 110-115" funny when i was told they were 115kg. Though they were used the year before and were stated as 120kg. So no idea!
Quite quick, no drops but when putting them down at end my knees screamed at me, I was in agony :(
wife wanted me to drop out from the pain on my face.

MTFU Mark. Simple.

Deadlift 220kg for reps: 8. Joint 2nd
Horrible, knees were killing me and bending them was a problem meaning a higher arse starting point than i would like. Thin mat on grass underfoot, also not nice lol.
9 reps won, I wanted 10 so not happy that I only got 8.

Yoke 260kg 20 metres: 20 secs. 4th.
My worst event, with seriously bad knees I wasn't looking forward to this. Well, those non 100kg farmers were used as base for yoke, so this could have been 260/290/or possibly even 300. Who knows?! I hurt after this. Hard.

Arm over arm 4x4 pull 20 metres ish: 17secs, 2nd.
car wasnt heavy enough so they stuck 550kg more of people in there. Quality.
slight downhill then uphill for last 8m or so. Big pull to start would get it rolling (harder the pull the more it rolled) then just need to wind in the rope until near the hill.
I got to the hill quick and the commentator commented that this was going to be fast. Pulled hard a few times and 17 secs was called out.

With no event wins I know I wasn't winning, I was thinking 3rd at best but likely 4th.
Got down to 5th place and I was thinking 2 people either side of me had 1st/2nd then me 3rd.
5th got called and I was shocked, then 4th. At this point I knew I had 2nd place.

Boom :D

In addition to my quick comp write up it would be wrong to not mention how nervous I was about this. I was terrible, to the point of being sick and sitting on the toilet 4 times before the comp started.

So, how well did I do:

Prediction: actual
Log: 8 : 5
Farmers: 10 : 12
Deads: 12 : 8
yoke: 15 : 20
car pull: 20 : 17

Easy to say that I underperformed from that, however

log: 8 reps on log wasn't going to happen. 1 more rep would have given me another point.

farmers: was heavier than I expected, so a few seconds slower isn't too bad. Don't think I could have gone quicker given the ground.

deads: as much as the bar rolled away from me, my knees hindered me here more than back. Should have won this which would have won me the comp.

yoke: heavier than expected, knees in agony actually glad to get 20 secs in the end. I would have had to take 6 secs off my time to beat overall 1st place, that wasn't gonna happen with healthy happy knees anyway lol

arm over arm: 2nd by half a second or so. Faster than I expected so happy.

Over all I could, and should, have won this. Regardless I am over the moon with 2nd place :)

Great performance bud, lifting on grass in windy conditions is very different to a nice flat gym floor. I'm glad you're pleased with the result, you should be!

Time to start thinking about some open comps!
