2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Just get the bonnet's potted on, in my experience if they are not ready to fruit they will simply drop the buds/flowers themselves, they can also still grow a significant amount even when they are budding.

The Aji are lanky but again they will probably fill out over the summer months, I wouldn't panic too much but the tallest could probably be topped if you want.

Ajis are a bit lanky anyway but I found mine bushed out after I moved them into the greenhouse.

Mine have got loads of flowers and iddy bitty baby chillis

Even this little audacious little Hungarian wax is budding. Soon pinched those out..

Mr Gororong and Choc Bhut have shot up since getting a nice dose of sun. Bhut has got 2 flowers so far out of loads of buds. Gororong has a nice load of buds too.

mines anchored to a shed, it gets a bit hairy sometimes but tuck the flaps inward to stop the wind getting underneath.

Went to the chilli farm. Cool bloke,, showed me round their Polly tunnels. Really want to go too their chilli/cider festival now but probably working.

1x 7 pot
2x choc hab
2 x ghost
2 x Dorset naga
2 x frattlie

Does not potting up restrict growth? I had two Naga plants that were in 10l pots and they grew to be about 4.5ft tall, far too big. All of my plants are in 5ltr final pots and the roots are already coming out, but then I do bottom feed. They are showing lots of buds though so I suppose I shouldn't really worry, especially with 22 plants.

Yes, as it prevents the roots growing further.. This can also be used as a tool to limit the size of a plant, bonsai trees are kept in small pots, and are repotted back after a carefull trim of the roots for this reason every year or so.

The plant will have a genetic maximum size though which would make 'potting up' pointless beyond a certain size. This can vary wildly, some varieties will only ever grow to a foot or two, where as others can become much more tree like, some grow bushy, some taller and more spindly, it's all down to how they've been bred or evolved.

Got 4 plants on the go at the moment...

However I don't really know much about trimming or clipping them? Without reading the whole thread to become a chilli whiz, are there some basic guidelines? Should I have done so already?

Thanks

It never ceases to amaze me that people use big pots but don't fill them to the brim with soil. Bigger roots give a bigger plant and bigger plants give more fruit. It's a no-brainer.

It's a bit of a rookie mistake but I've often found I thought I filled the pot to the brim and then after the first water it all sinks down. Obviously I work around that now but it has annoyed me in the past :p

I think I shall leave them then. Maybe one or two can be potted up but it's getting quite expensive buying all these pots! I think due to the quantity of plants I have I should get plenty anyway.

No pics, but my Basket of Fire seeds are just not growing. They have pretty much been the same height for a couple of months now, which is about one inch! I know they flower late but I have never seen anything like it before.

Should I give them some tomato feed to help them on?

Diy ikea hack :)

Ikea trofast storage box and lid £2 (per box + lid), the lid has a handy hole for a capillary mat £3~ (b&q pack makes 5 wicks) wick.

6l square pot £1.50~ (each) sits nicely on top, drill a matching wick hole in the bot base and a couple of drainage holes in the trofast lid (use those holes to zip tie the pot to the lid personal preference). Drill a filling hole, I used some spare hose to help but not necessary.

The trofast storage box I used is the smallest and holds about 3l water/nute mix.

Ta, got the pots for my new plants, just need to pop to Ikea for the rest.
