2014 Chilli Growers Thread

My poor chillies have greenfly :( I tried washing them off with fairy liquid but they came back within a week.

I'm going to resort to a store bought solution tonight I think. It also seems that some have really good growth and others have languished quite a bit. Hopefully they'll all pick up soon.

Well last night I pinched off about 20 buds from my Cayenne. I felt sad when doing it because that's a lot of fruit, so I am really hoping it'll have a bit more of a growth spurt, gain a bit more height so that I can pinch out the stalk and then let it bush out a bit.

Pinching out buds in small plants
It's not a requirement at all, but what concerns many growers is by allowing the plants to flower and set fruit (if pollinated) will take a lot of energy, which could be better used by growing bigger (taller/wider).

If you have multiples of certain strains why not do an experiment and test 50% by debudding, and leaving the rest?

got a few more come out since then too :)

Nice work!

Open it up gently, get your finger deep into the sexy bits and have bit of a fiddle (technical term!). If this turns you on at all you must report it to OCUK instantly in the GD thread, as you are probably a paedo or summat weird.... and they will know how to help ;)

Oh, and if you want to have a go at cross breeding you might want to collect some Aji pollen and try storing it in a freezer for future use. You will probably need a tiny ziplok type bag and one of those silica gel packets, double bag the pollen in the tiny bag, put it in a slightly larger bag with the silica packet. Chuck it in freezer and hope it retains its viability.

(If it works) this is useful when all your plants flower at different times, as you can store some pollens for months apparently. So when you have a flower on your chosen mum, you can use the frozen and thawed pollen to create a new hybrid.

:D

on a serious note, should i be considering pollinating the flowers myself or letting nature take its course?

I've been fingering my chillies for months now ;)

Tried using a feather but it was hopeless. Also tried a cotton bud, which was OK but I find the finger is best.

I do usually give them a bit of chat first but can never resist reminding them I'm doing it so I can eat their babies :D
