All this really says to me is that people valued the noise above all else.

So, F1 is just a lot of expensive cars being noisy going around a track.
Speed doesnt matter, as long as it sounds fast. (Cars have been getting slower since 2004, but thats never been mentioned before until the cars 'sounded' slower)
Racing doesnt matter, as long as there is 'Ear splitting' noise.
Saftey and the well being of the drivers doesn't matter, as long as there is noise.

As for the comment about 'Balls out racing' for the past races. Thats a case of some serious rose tinted glasses there. I remember people called F1, Boring1 or the 'dullest motorsport there'. This was back in the golden era too.

But hey! There was noise, so its all good.

Imagine goimg to a concert without lights.

It may not add to the music you hsve paid to see but its still a big part of " the event"

Same with F1 engines - although if you have never been to a race ( or concert) this concept may well be hard to understand

I have been to a couple of F1 races and many many other races too. Mainly rallycross and touring cars. Been to quite a few concerts too.

And I still disagree with you.

The noise isn't a huge part of F1.

The noise of the cars/bikes in other forms of motorsport do not make or break them. I cant imagine people being this up in arms if Trials bikes sounded quieter.

Just seems very strange to me that the sound being such a large part of F1 for some people.

The sound is a massive part.... for those at the track.

Having been at Spain this weekend I've been able to make my mind up. The new engines sound good, they have a really unique noise with lots of whistles and chirps. But, they are far to quiet. They are quieter than the GP3 cars. The GP2 cars are a league above. For those at the track its a major loss. You can now see a car without being able to hear it, which was new for me. I'm used to listening to cars around the whole track, with the new engines you can only hear them when they are near you.

But this only affects those at the track. Nobody watching at home feels the grandstand buzz beneith them and the hairs on the neck stick up, and they make up 99% of fans, so in the big picture its a non issue.

So in summary, do I like the engine noise? Yes. Is it loud enough? No. Will it stop me wanting to go to F1 races in the future? Hell no! I'm contemplating going to Spa this year aswell as Silverstone and Spain. The cars are far more exciting to watch than before, and you can't beat the atmosphere of 100,000 F1 fans!
