I don't think our build up play was bad, defensively not shocking, but could have been better. Better finishing we'd have walked that 4-1 at least.

Slightly premature I feel.
Those were the two games we really needed to win to stand any chance of going through. Now we're in a dog fight just to finish 3rd or 4th.

Gerrard sucked, he also managed to do 4-5 elbow enforced jumps before he got the first yellow and a pretty dodgy late tackle with studs showing very early in the game. Pretty lucky to last to the first yellow, notable kept his arms down for headers after that, but the last tackle was just retarded.
Not entirely sure but Lescott had quite a few elbow moments of his own, smashed a couple players to the floor before his yellow, pushing his luck for sure.
Cleverley is getting in the right places but his finishing was laughable, Defoe looks quality but devoid of any real delivery. Johnson gets a crapload of the ball but wastes so so much of it with the majority of his delivery being worthless. Sturridge looked fairly bright when he came on, his great ball over for Bertrand to flick into the box, I think that was for the chance that Welbeck fluffed completely.
Welbeck, complete rubbish, terrible dive, terrible misses, terrible interplay.
The penalty we did get, I'm still not sure on, the player didn't move his hand after the ball was hit, he was sliding into a block with his arms up, and he clearly expected a low shot which would have been no where near his hands. Welbeck flicking it up almost flicked it towards his arm. Definitely hit his arm but it wasn't intentional and it wasn't a shot either. Harsh but realistically had to be a penalty, saved a point.
The worrying thing is, Ukraine really weren't that good, they held the ball in defence/their own half maybe even more than we did.
Chamberlain didn't do an awful lot, what we really need from him is when passing isn't working great you need those 1-2 players to drive the ball at a defence and create some panic and he didn't do it enough, not really at all.
ultimately it was a case of playing a "meh" team like they were the reigning world champions, easing back, passing around defence, playing two attacking minded midfielders deep and overly defensive and a weak team around them.
Welbeck is poo, Milner is poo, Sturridge/Defoe can be good but we need to play the ball quickly up the field to both get the ball into their feet and have some space in and around their defence on the break, the snails pace attacking we did and constantly passing it around our own defence was absolutely pointless.
As usual we have an England manager who calls up a few players from smaller clubs, pretends they might get involved, then ultimately use the same useless players from the big clubs. We bought Welbeck on to play on the wing, incredibly badly, instead of an actual winger.... great.
