I wish my Ancho mulato peppers would ripen. They have been the same size for weeks but are just staying green. I want to remove the two largest ones as I have a load of smaller ones that wont seem to grow any bigger so removing the larger ones might help.

DXP55, Looks like you have a good crop there. Are they Cayenne chillies or something milder?

Just bought a chilli plant and a pepper plant and they are currently sat on the patio outside. Should I get a greenhouse type thing for them? Or just leave them out until the weather turns then keep inside over winter?

In addition to this; am I going to get much luck buying chilli seeds now? I fancy trying a few of the more exotic breeds. Should I just wait until spring for those?

No idea what they are as wife binned the tub they came in - They seem to have stopped flowering now and quite a few have turned red - Are they hotter when red or green -

I have noticed they are now squashy rather than hard.

First haul of chilli's for me! First time ever growing them so pleased I've actually managed to get some!!

Only downside from this lot is that they have been at my father in law's greenhouse and he just picked them from various plants and brought them over - not sure what is what!

All I know if the green ones are very very hot - cut a tiny sliver off one and tasted and my left side of my tongue has gone numb!

Is there a good tip for knowing when your chillies are ready for picking? We've successfully grown them for the last few years, but this year all across 5 plants are still green. Not sure if I am being impatient and need to wait longer or if I need to start picking some to generate some new growth now?

Tesco starts stocking Komodo Dragon chillies - quite warm at a mere 1.4m Scovilles:

Worth buying and harvesting seeds for next season?

I would try but my chilli growing efforts are always scuppered by absolutely legions of aphids, so gave up after my second failed year. These look interesting though.

They look like Dorset Nagas.. which look like... which look like...

Going to make 2016 a comeback year after the first two years. :)

Came home from work today to find 6 of my previously very healthy chilli plants completely wilted with leaves falling off:confused: This basically happened in the space of 24hrs.

Would be nice if they recover but google hasn't provided a promising solution. Picked the fruit but no idea if safe or not...

Shame about your plants. It's a similar situation to a sick PC; tell us all about the conditions in order to diagnose the errors.

What is the soil/compost?
What are you feeding it and when?
What are you watering it with and when?
What has changed within the past 2 weeks?
What is the pot like (it looks very shallow, is water able to escape through drainage holes?)?
Is the compost dry/moist/sodden?
Have there been temperature changes?

That should give me something to go on :)

Well it's now August and the weather has been questionable. If it hadn't been for the various grow cabinets that I have procured, I would have had some pretty underwhelming results for sure. As it stands, i've finally had some pods to harvest, and some nice growth spurts. Check it out:

/\ Purple Flash. Lovely and variegated, crazy deep purple and white colour clash on some of the leaves. Pods are Tepin-like and very shiny, you can just make one out towards the upper left of the plant.

/\ Pink Tiger. Buds forming nicely now, pods arriving soon I hope.

/\ Goat's Weed has all gone and shot up, so much so that the top is peeping through the next tier in the growhouse. Very greedy.

/\ One of the random Birmingham Bonnets. First pods forming, hard to see in these compressed Facebook pics mind.

/\ Boom, one of the Ringos from Seaspring seeds is bloomin huge. First buds are forming, looking forward to some giant pods soon.

/\ C. Rhomboideum. Grows ever taller and bushier but does not want to flower.

/\ C. Lanceolatum however finally got round to putting on a growth spurt, and despite not being huge at present, has decided to start budding ->

/\ Beautiful. Calyx teeth form stretched out from scratch, no unfolding process at all. Very nice.

/\ A few flower pics now. The unknown aji here, not an overly attractive flower, and as I mentioned in earlier posts the pods seem to form before most of the flowers have opened at all. Strange.

/\ Purple Flash. Dandy.

/\ Lemon Drop. Sadly my Orange rocoto flowers have dropped off without pods forming, and no new ones have materialised yet. Dang. More pics soon when I've got some pod porn to share.

The compost was potting on stuff(can't remember the brand)
Feeding/watering was dependant on weather. Generally they get chili focus.
Only change was using a tomato feed but, all the plants got this.
The Pot is about 6 inches deep and never nearly paid attention to the drainage TBH. The compost when the plants wilted was drying (but moist about an inch down).
Temperatures did spike a bit in the 2 days before wilting.

Going by google; the lower leaves were more wilted than upper ones so may have been wilt disease or over/under watering. Unfortunately haven't got free time to investigate, have them in the shade at moment in moist soil to see if it was under watering.

Luckily, I still have some other plants which are thriving, just be extra caustios with them now!

It's been a couple of months since last pics. Had a 3 week holiday in that time and kept them watered with capillary matting and a plastic crate. Slugs munched a few in my abscence though:mad:

big pot sure helped - the big naga dwarfs all other varieties in smaller pots

I just got a Demon Red plant last weekend, previous attempts to grow from seed all failed so see how an already established plant fairs.
Whats the deal then, not too much water, i would guess at high pot ash for fruit same as tomatoes. Do they need to cutting back?

My chillie plants have always been kept inside the house. But all of a sudden, boom, infested with greenfly. Where on earth have they come from!? They're everywhere.

It is a waste of time trying to knock them all off so I've sprayed them with bug killer.

Hopefully they will clear up.

Probably flew in through the door or window now it's getting cooler outside. You only need one, the eggs are already pregnant when they are laid, hence why you see them in long thin rows early infestation. They multiply like crazy too.

All I have done is:

Knock them off twice a day, crush em in your fingertips. After while the majority of them are dead. After this point it's difficult because you still need to kill as many as you can even though they are sparse.

Dilute Fairy liquid spray: only works when there are a few left. I've had better success turning the plant upside down (holding the soil) and submersing in dilute Fairy liquid for a few minutes. That's a pain though.

Cover the soil with a few cm of sand (2-3), helps mop up the stragglers.

Separate the plants if you can, different rooms even can help.

Put the plants outside: not much help for teh plant when it's chilly, but for some reason this helps clear the last few away for me. For me, green fly infestation is ALWAYS worse on indoor plants than outdoor plants.
