Right roadies. Throwing this out there for a bit of opinion.

I will have been back riding 4 years in the spring. The Wilier below really has fuelled my love of this bike riding thing. Really I thought when I bought second hand that it would be more bike than I ever needed. It possibly is but life is too short to wonder so I think I will be relegating it to second next spring.

I still love it even though its a bit porkier than some of my pals and clearly an entry level frame. I upgraded the wheels and groupo with bits over time so its mostly Campag Chorus. I'll be sticking with Campagnolo in the future too.

Ideally I am looking for a frame which will get equipped with chorus - (I'll take the veloce off the winter bike and stickit on the Izoard. Or i may even spring for some new drive train.

I am looking for the following in a new frame

  1. Lighter than the Izoard
  2. Stiffer
  3. Long ride comfort
  4. Preferrably of Italian branding!

Have had a look at picking up a Supersix EVO Hi mod 2nd hand, Cervelo R2 (and swapping the groupo) and of course another Wilier.

I found Math Salden selling off some Cento 1 SR 2015 models at a decent price. Not normally big on black bikes but I am warming to them, especially the yellow fluo!

What do y'all reckon?

Easy one if you can get away from the italian theme.

the new 2016 Giant TCR
or
the new 2016 Super 6 Evo HMboth of these are dependant on your wanting a race geometry tho...

Italian branding is just that... branding. How many bikes are actually made in Italy these days? I'm sure you could pay some bloke in a shed in the back streets of Milan to weld you something, but once you get past that it's all Taiwan, China, etc.

However... If you really must stick with Italian, I'd personally be going Bianchi. The Oltre framesets are very swish, though the XR2 version does cost a lot. Bianchi are the longest running bicycle company going, so if you want Italian heritage you can't beat that.

Hence why I said "Italian branding" as I was anticipating the above response. Its a heart over head thing. I spend most of my life being sensible, pragmatic and logical. Allow me a little excitement!

Have considered Bianchi's. In general I like but value fm they are not.

Exist - thanks for that. I looked up the Giant and its a compelling offer but still a Giant and therefore won't be on the list die to the ubiquitous nature.

Rose - don't like the styling and too many canyons round here. I am looking to have something a little different.

Yeah, fair enough. Besides, what isn't made in the Far East these days.

And yes, Bianchi do make you pay for the name.

How about Dedacciai? The Gladiatore frame is meant to be good for endurance, or there's the Ran or Nerissimo frames that cost a bit more and are a bit more racy. The Ran is just 1115g for frame and fork, so pretty light, the Nerissimo is 1150g, the Gladiatore 1430g. Nerissimo and Gladiatore are BSA, Ran is PF30, but if you're going campag then you're into weird bb fittings no matter what the shell is. Their Atleta frame is a stiff aero frame but reviews say it's not so great for long distance comfort.

Yeah, I've been perving at Deda's line up and dreaming...

Cinelli? Tifosi?

then my other suggestion of the new s6 stands.

I would think of your purchase from now on as why would I not buy the Cannondale over bike X,Y,Z and you ll probably not find any reason to other than maybe the Trek Edmonda or Cervelo R5 which I personally think are the 4 best frames on the bike market ( including the TCR and being non aero )

Quick update.
Planet X sale on Christmas day allowed me to pick up a new MY15 Campagnolo Chorus groupset for £540.
Last night spotted Supersix EVO HM frames at £750 brand new albeit MY15. Team colours but I quite like that. Looked like too good a bargain to miss. Its an 800g frame that reviews highly and is the same as the pro team were using. Went for a 58 and I hope its ok. 56 looked a touch aggressive for me compared to my Wilier.

Awesome frame choice & great bargain! Still not sure why you love your compag groupsets so much with the huge price premium...! ;)

Chorus is really nice. It has cost £530 and it probably sits between Ultegra and Dura Ace in terms of quality. Also the shape of the hoods is great for me. Also Campagnolo only make bike stuff - no fishing reels!

The way I see it - I will have close to pro level bike for £1400 less wheels. Quite excited!

To be honest if you get the Ultra torque stuff its fine. Yes you need a bearing puller to change crankset bearings but no special tools involved. Powertorque on the lower level groupos I believe to be more of an issue.

Chorus for only £530? Nice. Shame the Campag tools will cost the same :p

Two campag bikes and the only specific tool I've needed is a cassette tool, and even then you can "finesse" a shimano one in there with a tap from a mallet

ok, so you need a puller to change bearings on UT or PT cranks, but the bearings last longer than 20 minutes, so it's not the end of the world.

I wasn't entirely serious :) Apologies if I've offended the Campag Elite.

it's a popular idea that a campag gruppo is expensive to maintain. I just want to spread the love in the vain hope that economy of scale will kick in and an EPS groupset gets to be cheaper than a new kidney one day ;)

I ride with a dude who is the very definition of old school. He probably wrote the rules.

He will ride only Colnago as they are properly built in Italy. He will only use Italian anything. His new Colnago is full Record which he built up himself and he doesn't have expensive tools or have any bother with any of his many full Campag bikes. I think it's honestly just a silly myth people bash about.

Campag stuff is dear though, as in, stupidly dear. But it is seriosly lovely isn't it?
Cheapo Campag Xenon stuff on my winter bike which hasn't be tweaked/serviced for ever runs like a dream, runs better than my well maintained summer bike with full 105 :p

my winter bike has a veloce gruppo. It's been faultless, despite being put away wet and dirty most of the time. I haven't had to properly adjust (more than half a turn of barrel) the rear derailleur in 2 years...

Maybe I just missed it but Campag still don't have hydraulic discs right? Shame really, though the cost would still put me off.

I think I'd always struggle to justify anything other than Shimano simply down to price. I guess I need to ride with some SRAM/Campag to convince myself to believe the switch is worth it.
