2021 Australian Open

He's also looking to equal Federer with 6 ATP final titles this week.

Edit: And he's out, what an awful end to his season. Disqualified from the US Open, hammered at the French and doesn't even make the final in London. Clearly on the decline fast now.

Plus 200 points for the ATP rankings, though. Over 12,000 now. Not bad.

Who knows what's in his head, maybe he wants to rest and those were mostly tactical losses.

Fine.

Novak Djokovic confirms he will skip Paris Masters, admitting: ‘I am mentally exhausted’
Djokovic confirms he'll skip Paris Masters, saying: 'I'm mentally exhausted' (tennishead.net)

"Djokovic opted to play Vienna to get the two wins he needed to secure the year-end world number one spot, but as soon as that was done he slumped to a dismal 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Sonego.

It was his first ever loss to a lucky loser and the worst defeat statistically of his entire career, yet afterwards he was completely remorseless.

“Yes, clinching the [year-end] number one had an effect on me today,” Djokovic said.

“I’ve done what I came here for, securing the number one. And I move completely fine with today’s result.
Straka, however, did not take kindly to the comments, even if he did stop short of accusing the world number one of tanking.

“I find such statements unnecessary,” Straka told Der Standard following Djokovic’s defeat.
“Even if you would think so, you don’t say that in any press conference.”"

Medvedev won it, while Djokovic and Nadal didn't make it to the final.

Hints and signs about the change of the generations but still I don't think anyone of the younger players is as talented as the World number 1 or even the 2.
I don't even see positive press about future talents, someone 18-19-year-old who can become great one-day.

They, especially Rusedski, have been banging on about the 'changing of the guard' for a few years now.

None of the current top 20 show signs (so far) of being as good as the top 4 were/are when they're fit and healthy, imo.

There's a few players (2 or 3 Italians especially) outside of the top 20 that look like they might be up to it, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I don't see any Brits coming through yet, unfortunately.

ETA: I'm looking forward to seeing what Murray/Soares can achieve next year in the men's doubles. I had a feeling Murray/Skupski would be splitting up as the energy and positive attitude just wasn't there in the last few tournaments of the year. You could tell Murray just wasn't happy and that he felt he needed to win more than his fair share of the points. I wonder who Neal Skupski is going to partner, haven't seen anything on that yet. Salisbury/Ram must be gutted losing their (London) semi-final the way they did, so close, they must have thought they had it. It was frustrating to watch too, tbh.

Kyrgios is so good to watch when his head's in the right place and he's relaxed.

Great to hear crowds back at the tennis too, even if they're cheering every poor shot from Humbert.

Edit: 7 minutes later, his head's gone over a net call :D

Somehow I think the lower half of the men's draw is easier.

The upper half has Djokovic, Thiem, Zverev, Raonic, Dimitrov, had Wawrinka and Cilic...

Forgot Kyrgios vs Thiem was on, 2 sets all and level in the 5th. Will be a massive upset if Kyrgios wins.

Edit: Thiem's backhand might be the best shot in tennis atm, ridiculous power and consistency.

He's big, slow and struggles to win points against players that hit the ball back to him although that seems to be an issue for most of the taller players. Of all of the giants, I can only think of Del Potro and Cilic who have won a major.

Commentator suggesting Djokovic could win an Oscar for his acting skills was bants :D
