2024 OLED bonanza take your pick from dozens of new monitors

If you can wait a few months there will be 4k variations available, if that’s appealing to you. Should be more info in early Jan.
if i were to stick with 1440p whats a good choice? on a 7900xtx currently, need at least 240FPS for shooters, i may upgrade to a 5080 when released if its worth it, shouldn't be too long to find out. Maybe that will hit required frames at 4K, i dunno???

There's probably a few 360hz 1440p monitors at the price you'd get a similar 240hz

Decided to make a pretty drastic decision and bought the LG 32" dual mode 4k 240hz / 1080p 480hz this morning, managed to get it with a discount down to £930.98 so looking forward to that arriving.

I'm blaming each and everyone of you for saying how good 4k is.

Also looking forward to having the dual mode available as well, I'm sure there are parts of me still clinging onto thinking I can hang with a competitive scene as I get older and that the only thing holding me back is my lack of 480hz...
Arrived yesterday so I've been using it for a fair few hours.

4k is ridiculously crisp at 32", currently using Windows at 125% but there are times when I'm tempted to drop it down to 100% for more screen space. For games, it's lovely and particularly the single player/not-sweaty FPS games that I play - so Space Marine 2, Helldivers 2, Wukong and Horizon Remastered all look stunning. Usual hit to frame rates but acceptable with how I'm balancing settings.

240hz is nice at 4k, I do think that if you're still on 144hz in 2024 (nearly '25!) then you're missing out on some serious improvements to smoothness/experience. In particular for work, I'm finding both the matte finish and the text clarity significantly better than my 1440p 360hz QD-OLED - though I think that really be down to the improvements moving from 1440p to 4k.

480hz is actually bonkers. I'm coming from 360hz QD-OLED (although I have been away with work for the past week so was on a 180hz 1080p monitor so that's probably impacting my perception) but 480hz in motion is just insane clarity. It obviously comes at the cost of running the monitor at 1080p and it's not too bad running full size (32") but it's definitely more blurry at the 24.5 and 27 modes. I'm doing the usual 'push the screen' back approach as well which helps.

I have found that I can run it at full 32" size but with a custom resolution of 1440 x 810 in a cropped/centre mode (so an entire black border). It gives me sharper pixels compared to the standard 24" mode and means it's easier to hit the 400+ frames in the games that make use of it (only really OW2 and The Finals for me).

Only really a day in so I'll be interested to see how I find it after a few more weeks of use but initial impressions are really good.

@t2na thanks for the mini-review!

How are you finding the increase in screen size?

Also, how’s the matte finish for games etc? The usual whinge is that the screen looks less vibrant but it’s impossible to know whether that’s really a thing if you haven’t seen the differences in person.

It does definitely feels bigger (but again, might be because I was on 24" 1080p for the last week) but it's not so big that it's 'noticeable', if that makes sense? I was a bit worried that it would feel overwhelming but I've just moved it slightly further back compared to where my previous 27" one was and it's not an issue at all. I'm using a 70cm desk and it's essentially at the back of that so around an arms length away - and if anything, the extra size makes it really nice for the single player games too. Space Marine 2 felt genuinely all consuming on it and I've just bought The Last of Us Part 1 in the Steam sale so excited to see how that looks!

Yeah, the usual matte vs. glossy chat that you see online has always been quite funny to me. People genuinely pick sides like it's football.

I like the matte finish on this, I liked the glossy finish on my QD-OLED. I work in a bright room so the glossy finish was always a bit of a pain with reflections and I think was likely the reason for any eye strain I was getting - but at night it looked stunning. I'm not noticing any major issues with a matte finish and it probably works better for my use-case where I work for 8-10 hours a day in a bright room. No real issues with it looking less vibrant from my experience so far, it probably might be something I'll be able to notice as I use it more over the next few weeks but right now I'm probably in that honeymoon phase where everything about it looks great.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either option (matte vs. glossy) and it will ultimately come down to your preference and the light in your room/how you can control it.

I will say that mostly I'm a big fan of matte screens, but my two absolute favourite monitors in the past have been a glass panelled eizo and the mac 27" 5k display. They were both a joy to work with. beyond that, my only qualifier these days (as I sit in front of an LG ultrafine monitor) is that I couldn't step down from a 32" minimum screen size.

I do like a glossy screen and, whilst I know the Alienware 27" was 'semi-gloss', it was a lovely display to look at. At the same time, I think a lot of 'modern' matte finishes are nothing like what a lot of people think a typical matte finish would be.

Comparing the matte finish on this LG monitor to my wife's IPS monitor (AOC 24G2 from 2019) and the newer matte finishes are definitely a lot less 'obviously matte'.

This is the first time I've used a monitor above 27" so there is definitely going to be a slight adjustment curve for me - although I've spent the morning playing The Finals at the full 32" size with 1080p and have been smashing the games so maybe I've been missing out all this time...

Did you have a moment where you sat back a little from the screen and thought "****, I might have gone too far" I had a triple monitor set up a while ago, all 32" displays and while i felt no small amount of achievement for the absolute unit that I'd built with my own two hands, I really felt like I was having a "I knew I could do this, but I never stopped to question whether I should."

Haha yes, definitely had that moment when I first got it out of the box and onto the arm.

It didn't seem so big on the floor initially - but when I put it on the monitor arm and came back into the room I think I went 'oh christ the wife is definitely going to notice it's not the same screen...'

I'm single so I don't have that problem, but i have had a couple of occasions (I keep an ultrawide under the stairs) when I've had my brother or a mate visit, they've stopped in their tracks and said "Have you changed monitors again?" - yes, yes i have. It's a problem, and I'm working on it.
