After re-listing it for sale following not much interest, it seems the 206 is now going, all being well a guy is coming down with the cash for it tonight.

Following my thread on Passats, i've decided that particular car is not for me :D

I haven't got a lot to spend, i've just bought a house so funds are pretty much restricted to what i will have from the 206.

I've got about 3k to spend, and requirements are only...

- Not 3 door
- Reasonable sized boot
- Reasonably quick.

I really don't want to be paying 400 sheets or so a year on tax, regardless of whether its ''not much money in the real world'', i still have bills to pay and a house to furnish!

Suggestions? Last time i ignored any form of reasonable suggestion and went off and did my own thing, which clearly does not work ;):D

Phil :)

£3000, hard budget. Too much for a banger, but too little for anything really decent.

What running costs are you expecting? You can get a fairly decent older car if you dont mind the odd bill.

given he doesnt want to pay the extra couple of hundred on tax a year, i doubt he would be too happy with the odd expensive bill :p

In which case he should just buy a Mondeo, the best "generic" car which wont generate any running costs. A V6 engined model will probably be quick enough. He could get a 2003 2.5 for the money.

What emissions band would that put him in? I seem to remember hearing that a 2Ltr will put people into the upper bands

Oh of course :/ Yeah it would be fairly high on tax. There is nothing with any pace which wont be, though.

If you've just bought a house I would put having something interesting on one side until your happy with the house (interior and exterior) If you need the space and want something cheap, I would go for some sort of diesel estate, something like a peugeot that will cost naff all and be about the same to run.

Then, once your settled have a look at something interesting. Nothing worse finding money for a new house than having to find money for the posh car.

House is brand new, theres nothing to "improve on" really, just a few bits and bobs left to buy :)

Not really in *need* of an estate, as long as its got 5 doors thats fine, hatchback or saloon is ok.

The 206 was *ok*, nippy seeing as it only has 138bhp, but the boot is smaller than my GF's corsa, hardly practical with a little girl in tow too! :)
