2070S to ??

XFX 7900 XT was £548.82 yesterday. Alternatively the 4070 Ti Super was £575.20 earlier on last month. Keep an eye out for deals and you can save a bundle if you are patient.
think you should be known as deal man henceforth :p

Are we thinking my 5800X3D is going to be fine and not bottleneck those cards? Then I start going down the bit by bit upgrades and before you know it, I have a new PC I didn't really want haha!
5800X3D is fine for either of those cards, especially at 1440p ultrawide. It'll likely need replacing for the next upgrade, but that's a long ways out.

if you are going to be dropping £1000 and looking for future proofing then wait for new graphic cards in January. £1000 will buy your a 5080 which will be much better than a 4080. If you cant wait then as suggested a 7900XT or 7900XTX or 4080 super take your pick really. If you need ray tracing then 4080 if not then AMD cards are better buy.
Optimistic. I reckon the 5080 will be £1400.

there is no way on earth RRP of standard 5080 going to be £1400, maybe £1200. Nobody will buy it as we saw happen with muted sales of the 4080 on release as its performance was such that you might as well put £400-£500 more and 4090. It eventually forced Nvidia to drop price on the 4080. I am not discounting it 100% but to me its unlikely the market will absorb much higher prices. Maybe initially but guarantee you sales will force them to drop price, it also depends how competitive AMD is.

I suppose we are going to find out soon and for all our sakes I hope I am right because non of us really want to pay these crazy prices.

I think the only thing I'll regret is if I spend £600 now on a 7900XT, and then before the end of February there's a £700-800 card that blows it out the water (Again, not sure how likely that is).
The 5070 could very possibly be that card, but it depends if NVIDIA repeat the past.

The 4070 was much derided on launch, in terms of performance it was fairly close to the previous flagship 3090.

The 4070 has 5888 cores vs 10496 on the 3090, almost half the memory bandwidth, but still can be within 20% performance of it. (Obviously architecture improvements, clock speeds, etc make a difference in new generation hardware)

But if they then they stick 12GB on the 5070, which would be a very NVIDIA thing to do, that would kill the credibility of the card for future big titles.

After seeing how Horizon Forbidden West crushes my 2070 XC, I'm finally considering an update like this also. Would need it to be power sensible though as still running in my mini-itx with 500W Gold PSU.

you could get away with 4060, 4060ti, 4070 even a 4070ti and 7800xt if you have a very good power supply from decent brand but personally myself would upgrade the PSU when you can to something like 750w if you get the 4070ti or 7800xt or anything above this jus to be on the safe side.

If that psu can take a 4070 Super I'd say that would be a v good option for you, and it's reasonably priced in comparison to the higher-up's. I would bother with the normal 4070 unless much cheaper.

After thinking about it all week, I finally went with the 4080 Super TUF, Corsair RM1000X, and upgraded to 32gb ram for cheap.

Thanks for everyone’s advice! It was very helpful. Initially I made this post stating I was only really interested in raster performance, but after a TON of research, I think that was mainly cause my 2070 Super was never really up to the task of some Nvidia features, or outright didn’t have access to the 40 series perks. I’m excited to try them! FG looks like something that’s going to be fun to test. And if I can get some raytracing while staying above 60fps in some titles, that’s going to be nice. I bought an 34 inch 1440p OLED ultrawide about a year ago, but don’t think I’ve seen the best of it yet.

The main drawback was the price, obviously. I ruled out the 4070 Super cause of the 12gb. And then when looking into 4070TI Supers, it wasn’t a huge jump to 4080 S.

The 5080 being right around the corner came into the decision a lot. But, I really don’t know what I’d be getting myself into. Price and availability is unknown. I wouldn’t want a founders edition. I don’t think I want to wait another 4 months with no gpu just to have the stress of launch day uncertainty! I’ll watch from the sidelines this time, and consider a 5080 (24gb??) Super if it isn’t just essentially a price cut again.

Anyway my adhd has gone on a ramble. Thank you everyone! No idea what real-world difference to expect in my jump from a 2070 Super. But excited either way!
