20mph residential speed limit (replacing 30mph)

I just drive at 30 still. And keep an eye out for cameras.

I'd say still 8/10 drive at 30 here. Hasn't really changed since it's come in

My other half is from Wales, and we do go back every now and then

Should I treat all 30s as 20s, even if they still say 30?

It was really confusing last time I went back late last year. I was doing 20 everywhere but had people overtaking me/beeping me/driving right behind me.

Its confusing yes. Especially as many places jump 20-30 on same road and signage is poor.
I believe if you see a 30 now it is 30.

But I'm not totally sure. If I see a camera in a 30 I drive 20 just in case.

Here’s a question for those complaining about 20mph limits, ie did you keep to 30mph limit over say the last couple of years?

Pretty much yes. 30 "feels" like a sensible speed safety/realistic compromise.

20 just makes me rage. Even bikes often go faster. Takes an age to overtake a bike going 15 at 20mph

If or when England reduces the alcohol limit will people ignore that based on what feels sensible?

Only if you can get away with it. Same as the 20 zone.
If there's a camera you have to go 20.
If the till person asks for ID.. You won't be able to buy it.

For the roads I drive it would be a complete faff making sure it was set at the right speed each time, partly due to driving a range of vehicles each with a different implementation as well so I don't have it down to muscle memory on any one vehicle. Some of the roads I drive within a mile go like 60, 40, 30, 50, 30, 60, etc. as well.

Personally have never had a problem keeping a constant speed on dual-carriageways or motorway aside from the occasional hill - the CVT on the Qashqai can need a bit of attention going up hills so speed doesn't drop out. Most vehicles I drive sit nicely at 60 or 70.

Wouldn't say no to having a speed warning activated by the current detected limit though, for some reason none of my vehicles have that feature despite having the current speed limit indicated on the dash which is surprisingly accurate.

Its a right faff on hire cars in residential areas where the speedlimit jumps around.

One of the more annoying things about the 20 here is how much it does junk around. Many times it'll go 20-30-20 with no really reason why.

Ie.. Its not like it suddenly changes to residential = 20. It seems random a lot of the time

So it's been a while since the 20mph came in. Over 9/10 drivers in my area still drive at 30. So I've hardly seen any impact.

Car is much better at 30 than 20.
20 is higher revs and a gear down.
30 is 1800 and 20 is about 2200 rpm
Doesn't take much change in throttle around 20 for the gear changing up and down either.

It's a discussion about 20mph limits & how much of a pain in the **** they are isn't it? Her car isn't really happy at 20mph full stop unless you want to drive everywhere at 2K RPM in 2nd.

Are people not allowed opinions that you disagree with?

You seem to care, you keep replying.

That's what ours does.
Drops from 3 in 3rd to 2nd at 20 at 2200rpm.

As mentioned above it can be car/vehicle dependant - some of the work vans have a huge amount of low range - you really need to rev em out to get up to speed any time soon but will sit happily at 20 in the middle of the appropriate gear, other vehicles not so much.

Yeah exactly. When you have an automatic can't even choose the gear.
Well. Old ones!

What I mean is places where there are good reasons to have a different lower limited to further reinforce that people need to drive extra carefully in those areas.

Until 20 is enforced by GPS/black boxes etc I'll carry on (as do the vast majority my way) at the old speed limits.
30 in the bigger main road areas and a 20ish speed around schools and in city centres.

20mph is still deeply unpopular here. But the same speed cameras still exist. Sure it's breaking the law.

Even the police drive to the old speeds, at least round here. In fact it probably annoys them more as they are permanently on the road.

Fortunately still sensible around where I live, 2x 20 limits through the school zones and one where the road layout through the village isn't suited to modern traffic.

Common sense prevails.

Its not even blanket here. You'll be in town and have to keep an eye on the 30 to 20 changes if you're sticking to 20.

Ita incredibly frustrating driving at 20 in what is clearly over thr top location. It happens sometimes that you'll get one person driving 20 with a huge queue of cars behind them. But I'm actually surprised how little the 20mph limit is observed.
I thought by now most would. But absolutely not the case!

Most studies have shown in the longer run the average speed in blanket 20s creeps back up to around 26-28MPH while average speed in 30s is 31. Most longer term studies have shown fatalities of pedestrians reduces quite a bit for the first 2-3 years but then returns to what it used to be in the longer run while cyclist fatalities generally doubles after a few years, probably due to a mixture of the lower limits slightly encouraging more people to cycle and the lower traffic limits making it harder for vehicles to pass cyclists, etc. resulting in more incidents.

Said this about cycling from the start.
My ebike goes 15mph.
No way to I want a car passing me at a delta of 5mph!
Thw amount of side by side time is too high. The gap for a car to wait to overtake St that speed is just too high.
