22" or 24"

sorry for the delay C64 im not bothered about hdmi m8,so you think it will be best ot hang on then m8 as was going to order the one i said today, god all those monitors and dont know which to get

Personally i would hang on as the Hc version may be around
£400 too when it levels out £400 is a lot to spend on a monitor
just make sure you are certain.
But there's many very happy dell 2407 owners on here from what i can see
which is why i am getting one.

Which TFT do you currently own? A Samsung 226BW?

No i use a crt on my gaming pc but am getting the 24" dell as soon as funds permit it.On the downstairs pc i have a 19" Viewsonic VX922 which i bought for gaming reasons after seeing people recommend it but found it unbearable for cs source at times so it's used for web browsing now.
I have owned for 1 day a 226bw which i took back to the high street shop
as it had dreadful banding at top and bottom of the screen i didn't check which
version it was as it would have meant i would have to have kept it.
I presumed it must be the slovakian panel hence my current anti 226bw panel lottery stance.

So all the talk about the panel lottery from yourself is complete garbage as you haven't had any experience with the different panels whatsoever?

For all you know you could have had an "S" panel, yes?

No highly unlikely that a recent panel is S think your just nit picking
as you probably own one.
People always get defensive about their own hardware i can understand.
And how is saying they shouldn't be allowed to have this panel lottery garbage exactly.
I don't recall saying i have owned all three panel types and can compare them
all i know is whatever i got was garbage regardless of which panel type
the chances of that being an S is 1 in 10000.
There's some more recent 226bw owners dissatisfied on recent posts here.

Im not sure what all this arguing is about, its a little daft imo.

each panel type has its own querks and features. For example the TN panels can have much faster responce times than other panels, but lower viewing angles than others.
This is taken from hardforums:
TN film (Twisted Nematic)
- low manufacturing/retail costs
- restrictive viewing angles
- fast pixel response times
- dead pixels display white. Stuck pixels display RGB colors
- lower contrast levels means blacks are not as dark as VA based panels
- lower color reproduction

IPS (In Plane Switching)
- improved viewing angles over TN
- very good color reproduction
- slower pixel response times than TN
- dead pixels display black
- lower contrast levels means blacks are not as dark as VA based panels
Super-IPS (S-IPS)
- same as IPS except ...
- likely best color reproduction of all TFT
- less expensive to produce than IPS
- improved pixel response
VA (Vertical Alignment) Technologies

MVA (Multidomain Vertical Alignment)
- compromise between TN and IPS technologies
- superior color reproduction over TN but not as good as IPS
- very good viewing angles but less than IPS
- higher contrast than TN or S-IPS means very good blacks
- dead pixels are black
- slower pixel response than TN or IPS
- details can be lost when directly viewing dark areas
Premium-MVA (P-MVA)
- same as MVA except ...
- "overdrive" technology increases pixel response but still slower than TN
- may have slightly degraded color reproduction due to "overdrive" process
PVA (Patterned VA)
- same as MVA except ...
- larger viewing angles
- higher contrast levels means darkest blacks
Super-PVA (S-PVA)
- same as PVA except ...
- “Magic Speed” (the Samsung equivalent to Overdrive) improves pixel response
- slightly improved color reproduction
- slightly improved viewing angles

It's not stats that matter if the factory is churning out crap screens
with backlight bleed and borders on some and not on others and white patches whilst playing certain games on some and not on others.
The issue is that it is totally random what quality of screen you will get
regardless of whether it is S A or C Sips spva tn film the screen build quality
and quality control is the only issue.

Strangely enough, I don't own one either but then I'm not claiming it is rubbish because it should be slightly worse "in theory" and because I've seen other folk criticising it.

would you believe me then because i own one? it is CRAP. go for a 24' or 20' , to be precise dont buy TN. avoid it like the devil.

C64 is speaking the truth , some find truth rather hard to accept.

for the history i own a philips 170C5 , eizo S1910-B, Philips 200P4SS

http://www.cmo.com.tw/ chi mei website interesting
that they don't actually make 22" widescreen tn film panels that
match the samsung spec of 2ms and the viewing angles also differ.
I have been scouring the net to try and find info as to who makes
which screens for whom it's hard to find but would be interesting
to find out.
Especially if you can get the exact same screen found in £200+monitors
in budget sub £150 monitors.

www.tftcentral.co.uk - Badass' site.

Look no further.

Screens are one part of the picture. The rest is the electronics which goes with the screen.

I have seen many a round up of monitors where several have used the same screen from the same manufacturer but they have different quality results and sometimes one can far outstrip another.

Unless things have changed, there used to be only 5 TFT panel manufacturers in the world. So you are only really buying one of these screens even though you might have a choice of 20.

Don't forget some manufacturers have their own overdrives, settings, electronic tweaks which they either add or get the panel manufacturer to add to just their monitor.

On that basis the Octigen LCD TFT Monitor 22 inch Wide 236617lnotg has the same chi mei TN panel as the Samsung 226BW without the overdrive from 5ms to 2ms for £139.00 inc. However, I still think the Samsung would come out better in a review side by side.

In fact i'm pretty sure almost every 22" screen is from one of three manufacturers yet they all get very different reviews.

Apart from some quality issues (bleeding etc) with the C panels on the samsung, it doesn't really make any difference between the S, A or C panels so long as you have got a quality C panel. They all can be set up to look (almost) as good as each other yet this monitor, with whatever panel, gets one or two stars more than any other 22" monitor in reviews.

Overall all then you have to look at the complete package IMO

Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP is back in stock i am tempted
heard a lot of good things about this S-IPS panel.

well went for the Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP,over the moon with it,it looks huge compared to my 19", and picture quality is amazing now to test my games

My personal opinion is that 24" screens are still too expensive. They cost around double a 22" and while they are obviously better, it's not like you are getting a huge increase in size.

That said, just noticed that Samsung. At £323 it's approaching a decent price.
