My golf did it recently, went through various stages
-couldnt get key in lock
-couldnt turn key in lock
-key turned and heard central locking but none of the doors actually unlocked
-doors unlocked but handles just moved freely, weren't actually opening the catch
Engine started first time fortunately
I didn't get a measure of how cold it was but comparing it to when I've been in the same location in the past I'd put it below -5.
LOL i imagine the OP lives somewhere in northern America or Canada but pretty sure ive seen him mention that hes from America so yes -23c around this time of the yr is pretty normal. Hell i grew up in northern Canada myself so was quite used to -20c weather during winters there and also a good 8ft snow drift meaning that my parents couldnt drive us to school but usually schools were closed when it got very bad.
Hmmm dont know what to do about your predicament...maybe invest in a garage to keep your vehicle warm.
Other than hot water and i mean boiling hot water theres not much else you can do other kick the door hard in the vain hope it loosens up the ice.
