23 mile skydive!

I look forward to seeing if the shockwave from breaking the sound barrier has any effect on his tragectory or if he does land safely his biology I can imagine the sound alone would be enough to at least perforate his eardrums!

How can you hear it when you are travelling quicker than the sound it makes? :p

Will there be any sound? I thought the only reason there is a sound with a jet is because its pushed through the air, Where he is jumping from its very thing/no air so will he have a sonic boom?

There will be but the person breaking the sound barrier won't hear it as it will be behind him.

There will still be large amounts of sound for him. The pressure fluctuations around his head and ears will be enough to hurt, even inside that helmet. A lot. He'll have ear plugs and what not.
 
Whilst the speed of sound is pretty well independent on pressure, the shockwave cannot be as 'hard' as a result he should (if he does) go supersonic with a lot less stress than if he did it a ground level.

Standing on that platform looking out just before jumping must be a massive experience !

I am insanely jealous of that.

I wonder what will happen if they have mis-calculated and the balloon doesn't stop rising at the height they have suggested. Will he wait till it does stop? And end up higher still... Or get out at the predetermined height even if the balloon is still ascending?
 
The wait is killing me D:

As there will be little air resistance at what speed will he accelerate?
Also, how far from the launch site are they expecting him to land?

Another question, from balloon launch how long is it expected to take to reach jump height?
 
Ascent time is about 2 hours, but the drop will be about 10 minutes until parachute deployment.

The original strato-jumper Joe Kittinger will be on the comms keeping this guy company throughout.
