Couldn't agree more Dowie - the previous record has stood for such a long time it's amazing really that it's taken this long for it to come under threat of being beaten.

I guess it's just a case of logistics and sponsorship really, it's an expensive thing to try and do.

I remember reading about an ex-SAS guy, Nish Bruce who was trying to get things together to beat this back in the 1990s but he ended up topping himself by jumping out of a plane without a parachute instead

Doubtful, judging by his posts in the Neil Armstrong thread (which were subsequently deleted by mods). It seems he actually believes the conspiracy theory about faked moon landings.
