£2400 Budget

You waited a year with no PC to spend £2400 on one?! Surely you'd be better getting something 90% as good for £600 and replacing it with something better when you need to.

Done the same thing myself oddly been 1 year without using a decent pc just been wheelin and dealing and building riggs and selling them on including some Q6600 riggs.

It definatly wasnt worth waiting for, doesnt matter if ones gonna spend 2k or 3k on a rigg its gonna be out of date 3 months later :)

Even now id love to cue up that Intel SSD extreme hdd and few 1.5TB drives and bluray and 24" NEC gaming screen but then I know its just a whole barrel of waste of money since its gonna be out of date quickly or will drop by 30-50% price tag 6-12 months later !

Having said that it proberly doesnt help ive got a pc bank account either....

As you can tell am in 2 minds, what I may do is just spend 1k on a simply quadcore rigg and sell it off in 6-12 months time or upgrade the graphics card at least but will see :)

I agree with you but I've been saving my money up and got dragged in to waiting for Nehalem. I want a decent system that I'll keep updating every 6-12 months. I want a decent water cooling setup also so I don't mind spending good money on that as I know I can use it for some time to come. What spec do you recommend then? all parts exc water.

This is what I would buy with your budget, I'd set the Raptors up raid0.

Edit- That should be Vista 64bit

OCZ PSU?

NO

wow roey
it does look like we're going for near identical PCs :D

im pretty much set on i7 920, with the p6t deluxe mobo and 6gig ddr3 - just waiting for phenomIIs to play out (and money)
for screen I got the BenQ 24" FP241VW from OcUK, but they don't seem to be selling it any more, absolutely amazing screen. though was around £460 iirc

for gfx im waiting for the new releases too. i wont be getting raptors as looking for near silent recording rig.

tj07 and wc parts should be coming tomorrow!

I think I'll end up going core-i7. Hopefully by end of feb its come down a bit. I love the look of the rampage 2 board though. Enjoy the case mate, it's quality. I'm going to get mine powdercoated after I have got a few bits.

Hi Roey,

With a Core 2 DDR3 would be reusable in the future, but DDR2 (800Mhz) is cheaper and is fast enough. Personally I'd get DDR2 800Mhz and a Core 2 (Quad or dual, up to you). If you have the money though, go for i7, Core 2's are one of the best CPUs the Intel have ever done, but they are old tech now so if you have the money, I'd go with newer technology.

Hi Matt,

Cheers for the info mate. To be honest I won't be saving that much money if I do go with Core 2 as the q9550 is more expensive than a core-i7 920. Obviously the mb and ram are more with core-7 but I'd be saving £150 - £200 if that. I still need all the other parts i.e., monitor, psu etc...

Looks like I'm going core-i7, sod it.

Brave man, I'll be interested to see how you find it for gaming and such, do post some benchies and stuff!

Well I've worked out that I'd be saving £281 if I went Core 2:

CORE 2:

CPU - Q9550 - £270
MB - Asus P5Q-E Intel P45 - £120
RAM - Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator - £90

Total Cost - £480

CORE I7:

CPU - 920 - £233
MB - RAMPAGE 2 - £300
RAM - Corsair 6GB DDR3 Dominator 1600MHz - £228

Total Cost - £761

So £281 difference, which is quite a lot but by Feb 09 this will have come down a bit. Plus my system will be quite a bit faster.

Yeah I agree, its getting to the point where the new stuff is creeping towards being worthwhile, hope the Feburary price drops serve you well.

If I were to get the 920 and clocked it to 3.2ghz, would that mean it's as fast as the extreme 965 clock for clock? Or doesnt it work like that?
