Anyone else find that movies in 24p are dizzy inducing. I thought it was my HTPC, but I witnessed a Bluray 'I am Legend' playing today and the juddering on fast scenes makes it look awful.

I purchased my upgraded LCD on the premised that it supported 24p, but can honestly say it's not worth the expense.

Opinions?

24p REDUCES judder, so something is wrong in the chain for you. IE Bluray with outputs set to 24p, forcing if necessary and the tv set to be receiving it.

Landscape scenes I agree look a lot better with a nice smooth transition its the fast paced stuff i.e. car chases

So what problems are you having? Don't confuse judder with blurring. Fast panning/editing will have blur because film is recorded at such a low fps (24). The current trend of super fast editing and camera switching (I'm looking at you Bourne/Quantum) makes most action scenes disorienting and confusing in a bit to make boring choreography seem fast and powerful. I personally hate this affect to the point where I won't watch the film anymore, give me a full width/zoomed out full view of a fight and fill it with (dare i say it?) CGI! Flowing camera moves and speed from a proper CG fight is so much more enjoyable than a smashy blurrfest.

Anyway, rant over. Maybe this is what your experiencing/noticing more? Or maybe even tearing?

Hi

Well i cant say i have felt dizzy when viewing blu-ray material at 24p on my sony x3000 lcd tv infact i really like the way my tv handles 24p it looks really natural.

My HTPC is set to output 24hz for movies, and 50hz for TV/DVD's.

What software are you using?

Your refresh rate is 24Hz?

Connected via HDMI?

What movies?
Bluray? H264 mkv 'aquired'? Is the PC performing pulldown or any other image processing?

What decoders are you using?

Is the source 24fps?

Yet again I think everyone is talking at cross-purposes when they refer to "judder".

24p "reduces judder" in that it gets rid of the regular "jerking" motion that happens when trying to play a 24fps source at a 50 or 60Hz refresh rate.

What I think pharcyde is referring to, however, is the fact that, even when played properly at 24Hz, thus removing the above jerk motion, 24fps is still a relatively low frame rate and some people are far more sensitive to it. I believe he's showing his material correctly at 24Hz, it's just that he doesn't like the low frame rate that results.

The problem is that film differs from video and 24fps looks far smoother in the cinema than it does at home. Personally I do notice the low frame rate on some large sweeping pans but aside from that I find it fine. If it does bother you then I think you're pretty much screwed as virtually all HD films are in 24fps.

I thought most displays that handle 24p properly show the image as a multiple of 24? My projector displays Blu-ray at 96hz and there isn't a sign of judder at any point (I notice more on a crt with a regular dvd). Change the output to 50/60hz and I see all the nasty judder associated with pulldown.

'Nail - Head'

PC is connected via HDMI, ATI CCC set at 24hz as TV supports it. Fast scenes ='s Shaky camera syndrome not judder as such but as if the picture is not updating quick enough.

I still don't think that's the case - you're not viewing these movies at 24fps.

//edit - I did a quick google and have found various mentions of this set having issues with judder/artifacts at 1080/24p. Do you notice much difference with 24p turned off?

24p setting "which is not even mentioned in the manual" is believed to not be related to actual 24p for whatever reason. The point being is that my PC is outputting 24HZ so my LCD must be accepting it I would say.

But the 24p in the menu settings is off, because as you rightly said causes artifacting. :)
