£25-30k

Unfortunately £30k is a hard ceiling on the price range and I'd prefer to be around the £27.5 area.

I should have pointed out that this won't be my second car, but our second car so it has to be something that the wife (and I for that matter) will feel comfortable driving.

I don't fancy the Z4M Coupe, if I went for a Z4, I'd want the roof down. Also, I was actually more worried about the Maserati than the Jag for reliability.

Oh well that throws a whole different light on things. I'd be boring and go with the 911, you know you aren't going to lose a fortune on it. Reliability shouldn't be much of a problem and servicing isn't going to kill you. TVR and Maserati on the other hand... :p

I think if it were me spending that amount I'd be either going for the Porsche 911 or a Merc CLK AMG55 :)

Or if you aren't bothered about the age/badge a Honda NSX.

Not many women would feel comfortable driving a 911, surely? It's a bit of a brute isn't it?

Not at all, my mum has even been known to get behind the wheel she is 'drives' a Fiesta on a daily basis.

My personal feelings would be 'sod running costs and depreciation and any trouble I may have with it (after all it is only a weekend car, so doesn't always have to start on a monday morning) and got for the Aston'.

A mate is selling a '90 Ferrari 348 but I doubt thats of interest.

Personally as good as 911s are supposed to be they do seem very common and a bog standard silver 911 just shouts no imagination - to me anyway.

The lotus looks awesome. Plus manufacturer warranty during the time you'll own it would be a major plus considering these types of car aren't cheap when they break.

So thats the 348 out :D

Unfortunately, I said it's not going to be just a weekend car.

Given the car park at my wife's work is wall to wall Bentleys and Ferraris, I should imagine that whatever we by is going to be going to work with her at least twice a week, and I wouldn't blame her.

Unfortunately, I'll be on the train. :(

Do it, do it now.

Plus imagine your wife driving that, plenty of other guys will be anyway. :p :D

I've seen no mention of a Mercedes SL AMG, may as well throw in a suggestion for that. Price might be a bit steep though; lovely car imho :)

You wont get an SL55 AMG for anywhere near this budget.

Imagine that :D Your wife coming home from work in the boyiest toy car in the world... a TVR Sagaris!

Quite unsettling for many men I'd imagine... all the 'bringing home the bacon' hormones kick in ;)

True, it's one of the first things I looked at.

I'd love the Sagaris, but I can't see myself nipping to Waitrose in it on a wet Wednesday in November (or June for that matter).

The accelerator isn't an on/off switch you know. :p Not every roundabout has to be taken sideways at 7000rpm with copious amounts of opposite lock. :D

I wasn't worried about that ;)

I'd just feel like I was having an early mid-life crisis if that was my day to day car.

Pfff, buy a £500 fiesta for going to the shops in then. :p

I can't wait for my mid life crisis. I can buy a TVR, start smoking pot and doing weights. It'll be brill :D.

For now I'd just buy the Z4 or the Boxster. They're fast and nimble, well built, reliable, safe and will hold their value. What more could you want?

Spending £30k on an 'old' car requires serious balls and commitment. Unless you really want it, you're going to end up disappointed.

I know this may not be as "special" or as glamorous as a porsche, TVR or Benz, but have you thought about the new Audi TT? You can get it in "roadster" as well to satisfy your no roof point and all the other points! :)
