For some reason, ive always had a fancying for a RHD Lanci Delta Integrale Evo2  While only a 15k car, ultimately its going to be 15 year old, cost a bomb to run, and be as reliable as a WW1 tank :(

You don't want an RHD Delta. None were originally RHD so will have been converted after build and not be "proper".

Although I agree. I'd go for a mint EVO2 and something more sensible for the weekday commute. I just don't "do" sporty coupes.

:)

Generally speaking, once people are actually get into a position to be able to afford to buy a £30k car, their dreams of Nissan Skylines with nitrous are long gone. Attitudes change as people get older, and of course, it's most people who are getting older that can afford this sort of money.

This is why its often amusing to hear 'One day, I'll buy an R34 GT-R and kit it up'. Becuase they just wont - once they can afford one they'll buy something else.

This made me chuckle as it is so true. When I was young and tearing around in my chavved up Capri I decided that I would buy whatever was the equivalent of an Escort Cosworth when I could afford it. By the time I could afford an equivalent in my early 30s, did I go for a Scooby, Evo or Skyline? Nope, I plumped for a big fat lazy Merc.

My younger brother is in a similar position, but its starting to happen earlier and less dramatically. From about the age of 21 he decided he would get an Imprezza of some sort. He looked into it when he got his 306 GTi-6 but could not afford the running costs, so compromised. Now he's just got a decent pay rise and can afford it, what's he getting? An Audi TT - apparently the Imprezza would not suit the image he's trying to convey.

No chance of getting an RS4 convertible for under £30k.

How about an M3 ('04 / '05) convertible or try and squeeze a M3 CSL within budget.

Cheers for the thoughts so far, it's got me thinking.

I wouldn't got for anything Japanese I'm afraid to say, I'm simple not a fan of many Japanese cars and they don't have that sense of refinement that I'll be looking for at my age. Besides, I'm afraid to say that I think most of them are ugly.

Same goes for most American imports (Corvets / Mustangs), I can see the attraction for some but I just find them a little garish or brutal.

As for the M3/5 or RS4/S4 cab, we'll be looking to replace the other car (S60 T5) with either something like a 5 Touring or S4/6 Avant (either that or an XC90 type) when kids and dogs come along in a few years, so I don't really want to be too close to that. It would be a bit same-y rather then a treat to go out in the 'little' car.

I wouldn't want to be doing mods either, I know it's a bit against the grain, but I'm too old to start bothering with stuff like that. I'll leave to to the kid over the road with the bright yellow 'sporting' eurobox with a body kit.

I will be test driving once I've narrowed the list, but at the moment I'm looking for options and for and against points like reliability, running costs, servicing costs, ability to put up with the crappy job that Surrey Highways Agency do with our roads and practicality as a car you could use every day.
