280 GTX problem

Right, I bought a 280 GTX a few days ago and got it all set up. Not OC'd or anything etc. Now I thought id play a bit of Crysis see what all the fuss is about but I get this really really irritating FPS problem.
Now this is where im not sure if its the graphics card or something else.

Spec:
620W Corsair PSU
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.6 <- Tried un-overclocking didnt help.
Asus P5Q Deluxe
G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5
Gainward GeForce GTX 280

Using latest drivers.

I can load up Crysis everything full play along for anywhere from 1 - 5mins until my fps starts dipping. It only dips 4 - 5 sec every 5 - 10 seconds but its very noticable. ie. im running along and you can feel the slow down then goes back to normal.

I've tried other games - CS: Source mainly, which seems to have no problem at all sitting at 100 + fps with no drops.

Any ideas at all would be a help.

Cheers,

What are your ingame settings and what rez are you playing at ?

1x280 is not enough to max out crysis .

If it plays ok for the 1st 5 minutes then starts to slowdown then it sounds like its over-heating. Also counter strike wouldn't make a gtx280 break a sweat or get hot. What are the temps like ?

may be just a tad too high for temps, can only be the reason for it starting smooth then dropping. It would be a more technical if the lower FPS were from the start.

degen, your card is overheating, the framerate is dipping because its throttling at 105C.

This problem can sometimes disappear after a few days or after just re-installing the card, but often it will stick and you will need to get it replaced, nobody really knows what the cause of this is yet.

DEGEN: Install expertool to enable the fan control - its definitely overheating - my card is a Gainward and its fine at:

1680 X 1050
All Very High
4X AA

Here is a benchmark run result of my machine at the 1280 X 1024 Res you are using to give you an idea :)

Watercooled Q6600 (G0) @ 3.6GHz
Asus Striker II Extreme 790i SLi Ultra (Watercooled)
4Gb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz
2 X WD Raptor 150Gb RAID 0
X-Fi Fatal1ty
Gainward GTX 280
Antec Quattro 850W PSU
Akasa Eclipse 62
Dell E207WFP 20" Widescreen TFT

Also, most reviews state excellent case airflow as an absolute must. Its a big card and if you've shoe horned it into a smallish case with poor airflow, you'll have to run the card's fan full pelt.

Make sure you've not got any "Crap" running in the background (ie: itunes, messenger etc.)

Hope This Helps :)

Use either Riva Tuner or Evga Precision to turn the fans up to 70% and see if that help your temps .

Ive never seen over 64c loaded on either of my 280's clocked at 730/1325 @ 100% fan speed .

bah I can turn the fan up to 100% and on a video card stress test im still hitting 105C. Don't know why I even bought another Nvidia card, the last one I had 7900 GTX had some fault on it that caused it to freeze for a few seconds - tried to RMA that but EVGA wouldn't let me as the sticker for RMA fell off the card.

Is the fan actually spinning up to 100%? Are you hearing a notable increase in fan speed, could be that the actual gpu fan is bust itself. Sounds like a definite rma if it is actually spinning up to 100% and still hitting 105c.

Yeah can deffo hear the fan increasing in speed. Just such a hassle to RMA it especially as its bank holiday weekend. Argh.
What are my rights on sending this back? Can I just send it straight back to overclockers and expect them to pay the shipping costs? Or am I going to have to send it off to Germany and be without a card for 2 weeks?
