£2k for a trip abroad - Where would you go? What would you do?

Thailand to me was for the majority a pleb infested hole. Obviously there were unspoilt parts but it just seems to attract plebs when they have saved up a bit of money or fat perverts sleazing over stupidly young thai girls.

For 2.5k you can do almost anything. Accomodation wise you wont get complete luxury for more than a couple of weeks... but who cares? all you do is sleep in it! I was staying in 5* backpacker resorts for £10pn in places such as australia and NZ which were similar to 3-4* hotels minus the frills and im sure you can get single rooms for not much more.
I would definately recommend NZ. Probably my most favourite place I have visited in the world. The scenery is spectacular and there is more things to do than you can imagine although unless you go soon it will start getting cold!
On the same trip I also went to singapore, aus and fiji which all had there merits. Aus is more of a party place so not great but fiji is literally like paradise.

My vote would be to hit SE asia such as vietnam or malaysia etc. Japan is gonna be on my list for my next world travels as well as north and south america. I have heard great things about them all especially south america and japan.

Ultimately avoid the horrid tourist traps, stay in reasonable priced accomodation and budget well and you could go on a seriously long and amazing holiday for that money!

I'm thinking of Peru, but still undecided yet.

Lots to see and do.

I had a budget of around 3k, but even with 2.5k you can still organise a Amazon trip and trip to lake titicaca and Machu Picchu,. Loads to see and do in peru and if you are on your own I'm sure you will not get board.

or you could just get a return from bangkok and travel all of SE asia. I think staying 3 days in 3 bankok is pointless. You can travel to so many other places from there for so little

Why do you think its pointless? It was an excellent place for a stopover on the way back from Australia to break the trip up

because generally bangkok is used as a hub to get to better places, ie the islands, chiang mai and other countries. Many poeple go to bangkok for a few days, hate it and get out.
Personally the first and second time i hated it. By the 4th and 5th time through i got used to it and it was great. Wouldnt recommend just going to bangkok in thailand, especially if you go to ko san road. Why not go to bangkok first, do some of SE asia and the thai islands then have a week in australia at the end with money leftover. I recommend byron bay, airlie beach and melbourne

Depending on the time of year I would give my vote to South Africa. Having just spent a week in an around Cape Town it is amongst one of my favourite destinations to date. Absolutely loads to see and do, plenty of culture. Lovely warm sunshine, depending on the time of year of course. Shark diving/whale spottings/safari/history. What's more it's great for the solo traveller. Did I mention it's dirt cheap!! Plus there's no jet lag!

I'm leaving for Lake Louise, Banff (Canada) in two weeks, and the trip is going to set me back about 2k.

Going to fly in to Vancouver, see the sights for a couple of days, then fly to Calgary and transfer to Lake Louise, snowboarding for 8-10 days and some sightseeing around Banff :D

Ok so this is what i am currently thinking... and yes this will be impossible to fit into the budget, but its only an idea right now :)

Fly to Australia via Singapore
- Singapore - 1 maybe 2 days
- Australia - 3 weeks
Fly to the US
- Snowboarding somewhere for 1 week
Fly home

So where are the best places in north America for snowboarding for complete beginners? It will probably be Feb next year. So Whistler is probably a no go area due to the Olympics.

Dubai is doable for that. Or the Maldives.

I'd go for them two.

What is the attraction of Dubai? It looks awful to me, bling, building sites and desert.

I'm going there in a few weeks time (not my choice!), so hopefully I'm missing something about the place.

thailand for 2 months

this is what i would do without a doubt..

was just there for one month over xmas..

depends where you go

One of our best was when we flew to Denver, and drove through the Rocky Mountains, and the Utah National parks (Arches, Canyonlands) to the Grand Canyon. We then drove back to Denver via Bryce and Zion National parks.

En route we did some superb Rafting, cycling and hiking. Scenary is just breath taking.

Some examples -

You can also take in Monument valley.

You would struggle to do all this in a week though. Budget should be OK.
