£2k gaming system

To be honest with that sort of budget you can go on every section of Components select best option and click buy until you've got a system together with the exception of monitor.

you don't need to spend that much money. you can put together a nice rig for around 1.2k that will keep you running for a long time. and if you must spend it, then do so around january! not now.

Surely with the money he's willing to spend it would be worth buying a VelociRaptor 150/300gb or a SSD for the boot/programs drive?

Getting the VelociRaptor has made an immense improvement to my PCs speed, I couldn't stress it enough.

Well that's a load of rubbish - as you have already demonstrated with your spec. Your spec does not use the best components in each section, nor does it even have a SSD, and it still comes close to £2k.

Again, not true, and ill thought out. VAT will be rising by at least 2.5% in January - and who knows by how much more throughout next year. OcUK do not do any sort of January sale so waiting will likely see an increase in prices not a fall.

I think you need to think before you type. Giving advice is one thing, but giving completely misleading advice is another.

I couldn't wait until January anyway! Unless it was for a very good reason. Good point re VAT going up from January 1st. I have booked two weeks off work over xmas and I would like to spend the majority of that gaming.

OK, think we are nearly there....

Looks like I’m definitely going to get the individual components rather than buy an "off the shelf" system. I really do want to include an SSD for Windows and priority games/ applications so going to try and work it in. Will probably be either the Intel 80gb or the Crucial 64gb.

I may also go for the Coolermaster Storm 'Scout' Gaming Case rather than the Antec 902 because judging by the review in the latest PC Format mag, it is easier to work with and transport.

Definite includes so far:

Dell ultra sharp 24” Monitor
Case (tbd)
An SSD (tbd)
Some Big storage (tbd)
Motherboard (tbd)
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)
Patriot Viper 6gb
Asus ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
LG CH08LS10 8x Blu-Ray Reader/16x DVD±RW
Corsair H50 CPU watercooler

Noob question, but got to ask it as I haven’t built a system since collage and that was 8 years ago: before I commit to buy, are they’re any other items I need to consider in order to put my build together? I'm thinking of things such as Network cards, Sound cards, Cables/ wires, tools, adaptors, any additional equipment to overclock the CPU, more cooling options etc?

Thanks guys, I have really appreciated the discussion thus far.

How's this looking?

* didn't mean to select 2 cpu coolers!

Thats one hell of a budget lol

Thats more or less what I would have chosen :D

Is that right?

Here is a review of the 2408WFP and here is a review of the U2410.

Both get good reviews so I guess it is a case of personal preference.

Personally, I would only spend up to about £250 on a 24" screen. With the £200 saved you could buy another SSD and swap the 5870 out for 2 5850s, for example.

I would strongly suggest that you go and see the quality of these monitors next to a much cheaper (but still decent) version to see if you think it is worth it before buying.

i personally can't justify spending a couple of hundred pounds on a SSD only so windows can load faster.... as for the other part i stand corrected.

based on what i've read i believe new hardware is due around january and therefor current hardware prices will drop at that time. i was not talking about a "january sale", as your clearly not aware of this you should not quote me. As for VAT, i'm pretty certain that the savings will outbalance "2.5%" VAT. anyway as he can't wait until jan, it makes no difference what i say about then anyway.

lol, ok dad.

To OP, good luck with your rig.

You can get a decent SSD for around £100, plus there would be room for a few games/apps, so it wouldn't be "just so Windows can load faster".

Care to enlighten us to what this January new hardware is? The only thing I can think of is Fermi. This will not bring RAM prices down, or the prices of SSDs, Monitors, PSUs, Mobos, Cases, etc.

I don't know where you're getting your info from but I speculate that it is nonsense concocted to defend you previous assertions.

Disappointed in the advice in this thread, a £450 monitor when the £200 non ids dell does the same job. i7 proc for gaming, watercooling for someone who hasn't a clue.

Just because someone has a 2k budget does not mean it needs to be spent.
£700+ pished down a drain imo for no noticable difference, perhaps 1+ year extra future proof (perhaps!)

i'm just shocked that no-one's told him to get a dell 3008WFP. the monitor is blatantly the longest-lived part of any PC (except maybe the disk drives :p).

if you're gonna splash out, the smartest thing you could do it on would be a giant monitor, and the 3008WFP is the only monitor that fits that bill :D

Good on ya mate. I spent roughly the same amount with loads of extras. Never regretted going CF though as the framerates rock. I too have an SSD for WIN7 but only a 32GB one. I have a 1TB storage drive. H50 makes the idle temps of 4.0GHz overclock only 37degC

Get benchmarking it mate and best of luck. The fun will be building it

P.S. I got the Hanns.G 28" for about £280. Best money I have spent. I may get another

Are you having a laugh, this monitor costs £1099.98!!

Thanks for that, i may just go for it :)

Go with a Dell U2410. You'll be happy you spent the money on a quality non TN monitor. With Displayport available as well, it'll go well with your HD5870.

The Dell U2410 is the successor to the 2408WFP and uses a superior IPS panel compared to the S-PVA in the the 2408.
