£2k o.n.o. M5

Yes, I forgot, you are an expert, have been fixing and restoring cars for many many years, and never ever have needed help even deciding what car to buy...

Your word therefore, is gospel.

Now who's the one being childish?

I'll withdraw from this thread before Paradigm has a seizure, bless him.

cracking car. mechanical stuff ought to be relatively simple to sort, but could be expensive (but worth it). id be worried to the max about the bodywork as i dont know my bum from my elbow when it comes to sorting out rot.

good to see we have forensic engineers on here that can diagnose the complete condition of a car just from 3 pics :D

I have to be honest if we're talking M5's it's still the E39 that does it for me. In a nice black or dark grey.

As long as it's got enough salvagable original parts to keep the registration, it's a restoration project, not a shed, and the same goes for any car no matter how bad a condition....

Can you?

Considering he describes the car as his pride and joy yet the engine is running like a bag of spanners and there is rust over a good portion of the bodywork I'd be slightly worried. That's all I'm trying to say some of you need to put your wigs back on seriously though.

No i can't, but if you read back i've never said if it was or wasn't a nail.

I've simply passed judgment on your posts because you've assessed the car and used your limitless mechanical wisdom to diagnose it as a total loss.

Anyways with that in order, bring on the E28 race car :)

Just nattering to said mate re the cost of the e28 M5 engine overhaul - ballpark £2k parts & same again labour minimum.

That would be at a specialist, NOT a dealership, double the cost again from a BMW dealer - They would do it though.

Then, there's the Gearbox, Clutch, Diff, suspension, brakes.

Assuming, of course, the shells nice!

Re-shell into one of those clean 518i's that always seem to turn up!

From the pics I can't see very much rust..

But you can't decide whether a car is repairable or not from a few pics..

If Tom had kept his cool and listening to the " Top Dogs " of the motors section he wouldn't have been suspended.

Hope it can be saved, these are becoming damn rare. A serious weapon, not exactly underpowered even today.

Depending on what needs done to the engine really, if its a strip and rebuild its a spanner job and a fun one at that anything more complex and its way past my tool chest and skills.

Either way i think that would be a great project but i've got a soft spot for old E30's and 944's at the moment so you'e caught me at a bad time :p

Its a shed ffs, Who drives a car with NO cruise control or aircon  ;)

If you knew your e28 M5 , you'd notice that that particular one has got aircon.

Look at the picture - The little vented bit at the front of the dashboard, just above the ashtray - that is the aircon.

A rare option, many do not have it.

Can't tell if its got cruise, if it had, it would have a second stalk on the left hand side , alas, the wheel obscures it.

As was such with 1980's BMW's, EVERYTHING including cruise control & aircon was an option at extra cost.

Before I moved to my current house, where everyone drives 'normal' cars!! my next door neighbour had one of these....sounded bloody lovely hooning it down the road, his daughter wasnt bad either (and if you know your butchers / meat vendors in Dunstable you probably know of his business)

At 250k+ miles its going to want a bit more than a spanner job and I doubt whoever gets the job would find it fun!

Its going to want shims & stuff like that, way beyond me also! - An oilchange is pushing it with me tbh! :o:D
