2nd hand bike for commuting?

you probably need 19inchs on a hybrid frame if not 18 go to the shop and sit/stand over some

I have a 21inch boardman mx race and it's almost to big for me 6"3.5 ,I think my legs are 34-36 and I barely stand about an inch over the frame.

I'd probably have been okay with a 19" which I think was the next size down but I was worried about my toes clipping the front wheel when turning.

loads of people comment that my bike looks huge lol

also wish I bought a road bike or a crossbike like everyone else who ever bought a hybrid.

So from what you're saying, would the triban 3 51cm would be alright for me? I've roughly 43 miles to the nearest Decathlon store so...

No, 51 would be far too small. Hybrid and Road bikes are different sizes. For the Triban3, you'll need a 60. My old Triban3 is a 60, and I'm 6'2''.

Yup, when i first got into cycling about 3 years ago i made exactly the same mistake. Got a v nice Trek 7.3FX hybrid on cycle to work when both my mates got drop bar bikes, because i thought i would need something more sturdy for paths etc. Even though the vast majority of people i spoke to irl and online said 'get a road bike'.

Within 2 months i realised i'd made a mistake and would have been far better off with a road bike. Ended up buying my first road bike the following spring and the hybrid has sat unused in the garage ever since. Must get round to selling it actually as it's barely done 300 miles and is in mint condition.

My very first commuting bike was a cheap full suspension downhill bike, because it looked cool. I realised almost instantly it was a mistake, not least because I had to lug 20 kilos upstairs to my flat every day.

I then bought a second hand hybrid, and probably rode it three, maybe four times before giving up completely.

I should have bought a road bike straight away!

Nowadays I'm on a CX road bike with 28's, and part of my commute takes me through a park and on what is basically a bridle path.

Not sure I follow what's going on, but I'll take your word for it, can't be bothered arguing to be honest!

not arguing haha

he said on a mtb it takes 2 minutes extra to cover his 5 mile commute

I said that on a road bike I could use those 2 minutes to cover an extra mile if I had to do so..

I've some hybrid bikes to look at, what about rode bikes? Triban 3 is a no, as apparently the white new triban is poo. I'm gone go to Halfords tommorrow, bikes suggestions can be from different stores not just halfords.

Unfortunately there are no stores other than Decathlon and Halfords that will sell anything even remotely decent for your budget. Tbh, Halfords offerings at your budget are pretty poor.

Back to the original opening post, you'd be best off going second hand if you want a road bike and cannot find a new red triban 3 that's the right size.

But the thing with 2nd hand is searching, knowledge (about bikes which I don't have). The Carrera subway for 199 seems like a good deal, but I want an alternative road bike upto 300..

Edit

What do u guys think about Vitus Vee-1?

Edit2

What kind of lock for 30ish would you recommend?

If you're absolutely set on Halfords then this doesn't look utterly terrible:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...uctId_810707_langId_-1_categoryId_165710#tab2

Personally not something I'd get so I may have missed something obvious (I'm sure someone else will chime in if I have).

It's slightly over your budget but there are often Halfords discount codes knocking about so you may be able to get it down to <£300.

Yeah..I just re-read your posts. No idea where I got that idea from :p

Don't blame you, when there's more then 3 pages I usually don't bother reading all posts either.. :D I can buy parts and put the bike together, it's not a problem as I've all the needed tools :)

Edit:

Could you also recommend me a decent lock up to 30 pounds, and suggest bikes from any shop (obviously in the UK :))

A lock from Halfords-only, you say? :p

Personally I tend to look for the cheapest silver-secure I can find. I quite like the Abus locks too as they have a much less annoying mounting bracket than the Kryptonite ones.

I *think* I have the above one.

edit: Purchasing components and building the bike yourself is often more expensive than getting a pre-build tbh :/
