So who owns the crown now?

I'm thinking of getting a few of these but am unsure who to go for.

In the past I've favoured WD - but not sure now!

I have WD Greens for all my backup drives, never had an issue with them. Recently got a pair of the 2TB Greens as well, which have been fine so far.

In terms of pure performance, in the 2TB sector, the WD Caviar Black 2TB is still the fastest.

The Samsung F4 Eco's are almost as fast but cheaper, quieter and put out less heat. See Samsung thread where there are some benches. I don't know why you would go with the 2TB Eco Green. Leaving out issues it has with going to sleep, the F4 beats it easily.

guess it depends on what he's using it for. the low power consumption looks very tempting if it's just going to be used as storage/backup where speed doesn't really play a major part

The thing is the F4 is very fast and has record power consumption when idle. They run cooler then the WD Greens too which I've not had issues with either. But there is a widely reported problem with excessive load cycles on the WD's which some say make the Greens a bad choice for reliable backups.

I've got two Seagate 2TB drives in a NAS and they are noisy - can hear what sounds like the head moving or adjusting every so often, not sure if its normal or not. Just noticed there is a new firmware out for them so will try it. Personally I would opt for Samsung.

I have all WD green drives for storage

They use less power and are quieter, the two main things for storage. Speed is not really a issue for storage.

Also the WD greens are very reliable, Unlike some of my experiences in the past with samsung.

Someone above's saying the F4 sammy is the king of power saving at idle, but all of them are really here nor there when it comes to actual power saved.

And as for reliability, i've had 3 WD's rma'd and not one samsung.
I think every user has different experiences when it comes to hdd's and its probably down to luck at the end of the day. I dont think any manufacturer can claim to be the most reliable as there are just too many variables involved.

Quieter then what mate ? The samsung F4's are quieter and use less power then the Greens. There are documented issues with the Greens having excessive load cycles. This may or may not affect you. It depends on your backup strategy and environment.
