Whats all this talk about these drives failing early?

I ask this, is i have just ordered another 2 of them to put in my server, to go with the other 4 of them that have been running for nearly 3 years now without a single issue.

Was it just a bad batch or have they actually changed the drive in some ways??

I don't know the technical term, but they go in to standby mode too early, a few seconds I think. Which means they are constantly spinning down and up again, increasing the amount of cycles compared to other drives.

WD have released a tool to change the standby mode to something a bit more sensible though, such as 5 minutes.

I have 2 WD green drives, had them for 2-3 years now without failure, but I have had a WD black drive that fail after a year.
