I'm considering buying either

OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-086-OC&tool=3

or
two lots of

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA1065)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-093-CR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817

i will putting this with

Gigabyte GA_X38_DQ6
Quad Pro Q6600 G0

and overclocking it

which would be the better option for performance (ignore pricing).

How far could i overclock the ocz kit

Thanks

The 2x2gb kit won't overclock (none of them do), so you may find that they hold you back if you get a good clocking Q6600.

You'd be better buying two pairs of the 2x1gb Crucial Ballistix PC6400 for £130. They'll keep pace with your Q6600 all day long.

Untrue in way said above of all 2x2GB kits, Mushkin 2x2GB overclocks, the 800mhz does 1066mhz on is tight timings and 1100mhz+ with slacker timings, and 4x 1GB modules hinder overclocking most times but not always.

Incase your interested if price dont throw you: http://www.mushkin.com/

4x1gb of Ballistix won't hinder an overclock.

And yes you are right about the Mushkin, but it's £400 price tag kinda takes it out of the equation in the vast majority of occasions.

Correct and its about £350, but its still not correct to say no 4GB kits overclock (or words to that effect) it can clock as well or better than some 1GB 800mhz Modules and has tighter timings. :)

Also the Mobo Memory Controler or CPU Memory Controler (AMD) has a lot to do with if you can run 4x Modules well or not.

At £350-£400 it had bleeding well need to.

And I don't feel the need to advertise its existence in every 2x2gb thread.

IMO it's pretty safe to leave it out of the equation in the vast majority of them.

Who do you think your talking to ?

Your the one giving out misinfo that all I am correcting, I aint getting at any other part of the post.

To the OP, I dont know much about them kits but the Geil 4GB kit sold here is said to OC well.

You really are a lamer m8, not worth the bother.

You seem to think you are the OCUK resident Memory expert reading all your posts, and dont like it when your corrected for misinfo as you gave above.

Use SEARCH and you will see others REC the Geil Kits to others in this forum, I cant comment on it from 1st hand use nor can you fot the 4GB kits you have not owned, I can add the Corsair is crap from 1st hand use.

Saying no 4GB kits overclock is again false.

No, I just take the trouble to read and try to help out on what is usually one of the slowest forums on these boards.

Am I stepping on your toes?

Bought the 4gig kit.
Can only get them to 815mhz and timings to 5-5-5-12.
Apparently the black dragon kits are built for stability not for overclocking.
As for no heatspreader it's no big deal..GeIL use a 8 layer pcb in these so they're not hot to the touch. Can get hot though when overclocking.
Was using these on the Asus P5N32-E SLI which is not the greatest for overclocking even though it has the 680i chipset.
I'm still messing around with the timings and voltage so will post back on how I do.
At first boot they were running at timings of 6-6-6-18 and a Vista base score of 5.2
Setting the timings to 5-5-5-12 results in a base score of 5.6 without overclocking the frequency.

That's the only decent reference I can find regarding the Geil 2x2gb kit in this forum. That brings it into line with other 2x2gb kits (other than your beloved Mushkin ofcourse).

And dude, I still can't get over the "Who do you think your talking to ?" remark.

Even the memory experts wouldn't try to pull that one.

I love Corsair, but the 4GB kit is a joke and aint even on their site (one i had anyhow).

I only bought the Mushkin on others REC's here and reading lots of reviews. :)

As to stepping on my toes, well that was me steppping on yours and you not liking the fact that statement was wrong. ;), dont make me out the bad one m8.

I've no problem with you correcting me on the Mushkin. I didn't feel it was worth including, you did. C'est la vie.

And you bought the Mushkin without posting any benchies

Ahh ?, how could I post benches before I actually purchase it ? (still not received only updated sig as never had one anyhow, be here this week, said that in other threads)

I was sick of 2GB in Vista64 and took onboard a lot of comments here and in reviews.

erm chill guys, i was aware of the mushkin but at that price i would rather get ddr3, i know i said (ignore pricing) but that was because everyone says get 6400 instead of 8500 its cheaper but i can get 8500 ballistix tracer for about £80 and im happy at the price, but i was wondering if 2x2 would be better than 4x1 think i will stick with the ballistix

No offence meant but for ****s sake guys can we get back to the question - it's a very interestng one that I want an answer to as well.

Cobb. You say get the PC6400 RAM. Well I was going for the PC8500 Ballistix but I have seen several dudes say that the cheaper PC6400 is as good.

I want to run a Q6600 on a Gigabte DS4. Should I get the 6400 or the 8500? Will I be able to get the 6400 version up to 1066 speed on that M/B? What would the advantage be in paying the extra for *** 8500 variety? In actual fact I am not bothered about extreme overclocking but like to tinker with these things.. :)

I am not too good on memory..:(

Thanks,
Steve
