3 nights in Europe, where to go?

I just got back from a work trip to Amsterdam. Has cemented it as one of my favourite European cities, I’d love to live there.

That said, I wouldn’t go now. Schipol airport is a total ****show with 4-5hr queues. 3 of my colleagues missed their flights home, I was lucky because my frequent flyer status got me through priority security.

I am in Verona now and it could be a good choice if you can get there! It is a friendly place and quite a busy place with tourists from all over. Food and drink are good with plenty of choice between different styles and classes of restaurants. Architecture is varied from the Roman bits to the Middle Ages and Renaissance and there some modern art on the street, galleries and museums. It is small enough to walk around but with enough things to see for a few days. The weather is hot and ice cream tasty! As a bonus if you are bored or want to go elsewhere Venice is an hour and a half or so on the train, Milan is 2 hours and Lake Guarda 30mins.

Where else have I been that are not capitals - Krakow and Gdańsk are both good for tourists with lots to wander around town, good hearty local food but perhaps not much modern art. Palma de Mallorca was a good touristy city centre to wander but except for the cathedral didn’t have a lot of other stand out buildings.

Probably a bit over-touristy, but I went to Italy (Venice/Florence/Rome) pre-pandemic; flights cost just over £100 and I got a train about, but talking about Rome in particular, I was absolutely astounded at the amount of history that emanated from every street corner. Food is obviously amazing, and being the centre of the Renaissance, there are no end of art galleries and museums.

To be honest if its Art etc then its really Amsterdam, been a few times now and still seeing new galleries and all kinds of media galleries, wall to wall food etc. LOTS of "brown" bars all serving different beers etc.
But you are completely right about Schipol, Last time out missed my flight home, didnt realise it was STILL having huge problems.

this has been a great thread! Thanks for all the replies.

Been to Amsterdam heaps, and going again for the day at end of October (had some KLM vouchers to use up so just going for the day as accommodation was mad! - hope Schipol is better, otherwise it’ll be a day in the airport!).
I was in Venice, Verona, Bologna and Florence in April. It was fabulous.
Went to Gdansk a few years ago, great cakes.

I’ve been to loads of places so it’s quite hard finding places to go.

I’ve decided on Valencia. Was a toss up between that and Carcassonne in the end. I prefer Spanish food to French food and the wines cheaper!

Also off to Morocco in November. Busy few months! Thanks to the government for permitting my man maths to afford it due to the savings on my energy bill…

I really admire people who can go jetting off on their own - it's not something I think I could ever do unless it was something where I had to go alone (work trips mainly). Hats off to you :)
