30/11 Strikes.

topshot you should be called bottom shot because all you seem to want is a race to the bottom :D

Public sector workers need to realise that they dont have it that bad at all. Look at cuts made in the EU to their public sector workers.

They seem to think that because they teach etc they should be immune from any cuts etc.

;)

The fact is public sectors are now as well paid as those in the private yet still have the gold plated pensions which we cannot afford.

Personally I would have no issue with this (my wife is a teacher so we will get one in the future) if it was sustainable. But its not, in no way shape or form. The country is in a mess, in part, because of these pension schemes and they need to be reined in to something sensible.

If life is so tough in the public sector they should all leave, you can guarentee them jobs would not stay empty for long as all the private sector workers would stampede to get them because its a cake walk!

And that's even after adjusting for age and qualification...

Is it like for like or do we have people on the check-out in Tesco making the average lower?

An accountant in practice or industry will enjoy a more fruitful career than one in the council.

Given the public sector monopoly on many areas, true like for like comparison is not always possible, however you can adjust (as the IFS have) for age, experience and qualification and gain a comparison with a much lower error margin than the measured average variance and hence good statistical significance...

I linked to the report earlier in the thread if you want to read up on the full methodology.

Not sure many of them do. Is it not the case that the overwhelming majority are just sucking it up and getting on? Why are the actions of a vocal minority treated as the view of all?

Because current legislation on striking allows a minority of union members (a minority in themselves) to drag the whole country to a stand still.

Out dated rules making you all look bad :p

i love some of the comments on the strikes:

"You private sector employees are simply jealous. Your bonuses and perks have dried up, pensions are worthless due to incompetence and poor investment. The majority of you couldn't get a public sector job because you are too thick. Now get back to washing dishes or whatever else you do, and leave us to keep the country running"

Its worrying to think these people may be doing essential services. It makes their argument even more invalid given that there was no major disruptions yesterday other than schools half closing.

You silly sausage, you do know Clarkson earns in excess of 1million pounds a year dont you? He can take his sentiments and stick them up his arse the facist.

The trouble with our society is that the richest accuse the poorest of being greedy for wanting more than the most meagre existence.

I notice many of you with the most conservative views have pictures of flash cars in your sigs.

Regardless of that, you do realise he hit the nail on the head with this statement:

"I mean, how dare they go on strike when they've got these gilt-edged pensions that are going to be guaranteed while the rest of us have to work for a living."

They get a guaranteed pension, they get a final salary pension. It just means they have to put in a bit more money each month to get it this time.

come at me brahh

gold plated pensions

Is the definition of gold plated not something worthless tarted up pretending to be something of a higher value?

If I gave my wife gold plated earings I'd see first hand the sterling work paramedics and NHS staff do!

Quote from Ed Milliband

.. the people who earn in a week what the Chancellor pays for his annual skiiing holiday

So either the Chancellor has an inside line to dirt cheap skiing or they earn about £3000 a month :D

Devils advocate:

Most of these people earn virtually nothing in low paid, low skilled positions and the pension they will receive is hardly huge. You sit on the internet with a Porsche parked outside telling them they are greedy because they can't afford to put up with the sub standard pension offering you can afford to tolerate. Most succesful people in the private sector who don't have a particularly good pension will have investments and other things for the future which are probably more effective than a pension anyway.

....
Disclaimer: Not neccesarily my viewpoint, but an interesting one all the same ;)
It's a good point as it serves to illustrate the familiar cry of "Oh won't someone think of the poor nurses having pensions slashed whilst CEOs, bankers and "the government" make millions and laugh from their yachts".

I suppose striking because you believe people stacking shelves at Tesco, often without a personal pension, let alone "investments and other things for the future" should pay more tax for your guaranteed gilt edged pension doesn't have quite the same ring.

Emotively it works well both ways :)

Shhhhhhhhhhhh!

Dont't burst the reality bubble! Clearly all us private sector workers drive prosches, mine just seems to be missing all time time :(
