After many, many years of PC gaiming I've decided to give console gaming a go - comfy sofa gaming appeals to me at this stage in my life :)

I got me a PS4 and Destinty... holy cow, I'm terrible!! Can't hit a barn door! Very frustrating.

Anyone else had this and how long did it take to get proficient with a console controller?

It will be a longish process! But worth while. For now keep your sensitivity low (default or lower in Destiny should be fine) and try and get used to small movements with the sticks rather than pushing them as far as they go all the time. Don't change sensitivity for at least a few weeks.

Good luck :)

Dependant on the game, a couple of sittings of a few hours.
Personally, I will never be as good with a pad, but now I prefer sitting on a comfy sofa.

As above low sensitivity, it was the right stick I struggled with most.

Practice with sensitivity in PvE until you are comfortable with it. In PvP you'll need to go as high as you can but you'll over/under aim like crazy for a while. Yeah it's tough and you'll get your arse kicked but practice enough and you won't even have to think about it. 5 years and you'll be sorted :p

I find it depends entirely on the game.

Mad Mad, for example - I'm vastly better at driving with a controller, but can't even walk straight, whereas driving sucks using M&KB but I can kick the ass of anything that walks the wasteland!

FPSes are generally awful on a 'Pad vs MKB.
Fighting (a la Street Fighter) and driving games are supposedly king on a 'Pad.

The rest, as mentioned, is just practice.
If it makes you feel any better, I'll be buying a XBox Pad for a couple of games I recently bought and suck at, so will be suffering alongside you! :)

Theres also the Venom-x and the Tactical Assault Commander 4 controllers you could look into.

I know the feeling, my last console was a SNES.
I don't have a console, but I got a Xbox controller for my PC and I can tell how hard it is.
Before I used to use a Joystick on BF games to fly, now I was using the xbox controller on GTA to fly as well.
I started driving on my controller last week, I'm improving but with keyboard I'm still better, shooting is nearly impossible.

Couple of months ago I tried to play Titanfall on my friend's Xbox, I gave up after 1 minute, before that I played God of War on my friend's PS and that was ok.

I really don't know how people can play shooters with controllers.

Also try inverting the vertical controls if you haven't before you may find that helps.

Yeah, tried that, didn't like. Odd, since that's how I use a mouse in a game.

I spent a couple of hours last night doing nowt but shooting things in the Cosmodrome (Destiny), not bothering with the story, by the end I could hit stuff :)

Now I reckon I'm ready to get my 'training' actually playing the game proper; doing missions, etc.

I was the same, always played with Keyboard and mouse on PC. I brought a PS4 (well the missus did so she could watch me!) and as you have started playing Destiny and was rubbish, after a few months it started to become second nature and after 6 months I moved my PC to the TV and now dont game using Keyboard and Mouse at all.

Give it a few months and you will start to pick it up

I'm awful with controller, spent a large part of my gaming life on PC.. I had no choice but to move to console for now ( lack of space ).

So I just try, every day I get a bit better.. Well I tell myself that.

I reckon it's probably a combination of the controller being less precise but also the levels of input lag on your TV. Gaming on console is generally easier imo.. the skill level of players isn't as high compared to PC on multiplatform games and I'd expect most PC players to adapt to console gaming fairly easily.

If you've literally never played with a controller the transition will likely take a bit of time. Hard to say exactly, it all depends how long you're playing a day etc, but it will come in time.

I would hazard a guess to say most console gamers have played a console (sometimes multiple) of each gaming generation (obviously dependant on how old they are), so we're used to it :p

I was expecting this to turn into a massive deal like the time I posted a similar thread regarding devices to help me on a console as I was struggling massively with controllers back when I transitioned about 8 years ago..

Its good to see people have matured here and it hasn't turned into a slanging match!

Regarding the OP.. take your time.. it will come.

I wanted to use devices to help but tbh.. you don't need them as long as you have the patience.

I played for an hour or so last night and already a massive improvement in just a few days, apart from when I panic and run around looking at the sky or the floor! :)

I've been playing consoles in some form or another for decades and I still do that :D

Luckily in CoD a single shot (in HC) in the toe can kill someone, otherwise I'd suck even more :p
