3060Ti Power Dongle

Just received my 3060Ti and it has a 12-pin plug in the GPU meaning I have to use the 8pin to 12pin " dongle " that it came with. This won't affect the performance will it ?

Seems excellent so far, much higher FPS on cyperpunk and it runs cooler and lots lots quieter than the RX580

Yeah i got confused when I saw it was 12 pin. I expected either 8, 14 or 16.


Odd how the " power dongle " has 6 pins. Maybe the GPU only needs 6 ?

3060/3070 dongle requires 1x 8-pin, where the 3080 version requires 2x 8-pin. Considering the 3060/3070 12-pin is fully connected on the card there must be some benefit for those running 12-pin dedicated cables from the PSU.

Trying to remember the traditional pinout. Think the 8-pin has 3x 12V and the other 5 are ground, so a couple could be surplus to requirements. Not seen a pinout for the 12-pin, I'll assume that the 3060 "half" version is 3x 12V and 3x ground.

All a bit odd really.

What would happen if you were to attach 12 pin straight from the PSU, or would it be physically impossible to do that ?

maybe some PSU's have a 12 pin ?

Confusing how the GPU has 12 pins, but the adapter has 8 ??

It'll just work. 2x 8-pin PCI-E = Nvidia proprietary 12-pin = 2x150W = 300W.

I know what you mean, but i'm saying it wouldn't be possible to connect two of the 6pins straight from the PSU without the dongle, with these cables...

or you buy/obtain a ready made customised one to suit your case/colour and dont need the dongle

Would that give any performance increase or is it purely aesthetics ?

Corsair are selling them too, on their site.

What throws me is there are 12 metal pins on the GPU, but only 6 pins on the adapter

OK I asked someone who has change to a straight 12 pin cable, like this...

And reported no increase in performance.

there must be some benefit for those running 12-pin dedicated cables from the PSU.

I'm sure we will find out in time. Nvidia would have put metal contacts in all of the adapter which plugs into the GPU if it were beneficial.
Can't really justify spending £20 on a Corsair 12-pin cable just for aesthetics really.

I think the adapter looks fine to be honest . Dont think it's worth spending extra just for a direct cable from the psu

I love the 12 pin connector, it is better than the current standard, it's smaller and you get more pins.

Fair enough. Any difference in performance or just aesthetics ?

I took the back plate of mine and tested the pins as I made my own connector, all 6 of the ground pins are connect to the circuit but only 3 of the 6 positive pins are connected.

Is that with the 12-pin cable from Corsair ?

Installed my 12-pin corsair cable today. Works well.
