I want a squeeze a little more performance out of my set up, kind of limited by my PSU (650W), but the 4070S does seem to have a low TDP.

I've read it's c30% improvement on performance? Any views?

Yes, many will tell a mere 30% is not worth the outlay. In graphical boost.

However, if you want a quiet GPU (RTX 4070S), that is built on a more modern node, that has more VRAM (12 gigs) that will in theory be better for 1440p. Then, this is a popular choice.

Playing devils advocate, why not consider an AMD 7800XT for £100.00 less with far more VRAM. Just check your PSU can cope with one.

Thanks for the reply will take a look.

Which is the correct answer. ;)
Aside from vfm for the upgrade, there's also that when the improvement isn't that big on average, some games can actually show almost nothing, or worst case they're slower. I don't think that would be the case with a 4070 Super, but it's something I'd think about with lesser upgrades.

You should be getting at least £250 if you sell your 3070, a £500 or £600 upgrade doesn't seem too shabby then.

As an owner of (Seasonic) 650W PSU, I would have no problem putting any current GPU in. Rest of the system is barely 150W max, so even a 7900XTX or 4090 would have room to spare
RTX 30 series top cards had a nasty habit of power spikes going way over power limit, but current cards are fine.

Purchased a 4070FE. Upgraded from 3070FE. Massive performance boost which I wasn't expecting. Running games at 2k the 4070s is hitting the sweet spot :)

Running an RX 7800 XT with a 7 year old EVGA Supernova 650 GS PSU, no issues at all and his Ryzen 7800X3D is more power efficient than my Ryzen 5800X. :)

Am I missing something? There is no way a 4070 super is only 30% faster than a 3070?

It's at least 40% on average, and often much, much more depending on the game and resolution.

It's the difference between 40fps and 60fps, that's massive!
It always depends on the circumstances. If someone is struggling to get playable FPS at 4K (which I assume is what you're referring to with 40 versus 60) then for £600 they might consider it money well spent, but usually from any previous gen card I'd want to move up a tier (especially since nvidia keep moving them down one). If the 40 versus 60 fps @ 4K is our justification for the upgrade, for example, then in a few years this card won't be playable at 4K again, whereas if we move up a tier, then it should last a bit longer.

No, there are plenty of games released in the last two years that get 40-45fps at 1440p with a 3070. Now he can play them at 60+fps, and if due to VRAM limited he could even play at 75-80fps.

Just sold my 3070ti FE and upgraded to a Zotac 4070S triple fan and it was a good upgrade for me. PC is quieter, less heat generated and 100watt less power useage when gaming.

Plus I think right now is the right time to sell the 3 series GPU while it can still get some decent money back, prices will start to come down closer to the release of the 5 series.

4070S is the sweet spot for 1440p gaming right now.

I have been away for a while, but appreciate the response. I am still pondering this but seems like a sensible upgrade.

Thanks.

+42% at 1440P and 4K.

with a half decent one being £620 i don't think its worth it, no, and its 12GB, which is on that minimum line these days, i'd be worried about its longevity.

That was exactly the same conclusion I came to when deciding what to upgrade to from my 3070 that was running out of vram. As you know I switched to team red and went for the newly released (at the time) 7900GRE which was on offer for £529 and I am glad I did as it's a cracking card. I don't miss DLSS as the 7900GRE can max out anything I have played so far at 1440p with sheer grunt alone.

I went from an RTX 2070S to an RX 7800 XT.

My recent buying habits have been GTX 970, GTX 1070, RTX 2070S, notice a pattern there?
People say with 8GB cards you will run out of GPU grunt before VRam, not true, i have serval examples where that is not true and i've recorded a couple if people don't believe me, Rust 120 FPS no problem, until you get anywhere near the Scrapyard, then its 17 because the of VRam overflow.
So i was never going to buy the 3070 and the RX 6700 XT i thought was a bit 'meh' for not much less, its more like a 3060 Ti.

And then the 4070.... this was the longest time i've ever kept a card, i usually buy in the mid range but upgrade every generation, not this time.

The 7800 XT was just what i was looking for at the right money, so i bought it and..... i love it, fantastic GPU, great drivers, its never put a foot wrong, i have kicked my self a little because the 7900GRE came out a couple of weeks after i bought it and i think its a better GPU even for a bit more money, but i'm still very happy with the card, i have no qualms with going AMD again, none what so ever, Nvidia have to convince me at this point, they have to work to win me back.
