Hey Guys,

First post :) - I have been reading through the forums to try and figure out if what I am looking to do is a good idea or plain stupid!

I have a 3070 FE and have been wanting to upgrade and I though about the 7900xt. I have a 1440p 170hz Monitor and would like to make the most of it, and as I thought the 3070 is starting to struggle unless I use the likes of DLSS etc.

Is the 7900xt overkill or just stupid, thanks in advance.

If you're not bothered about the poor value of the current generation graphics cards then it'll be a decent upgrade in terms of raster performance. With ray tracing it won't be a massive step up. The extra VRAM will help with some modern games.

The 6800 makes no sense as it simply isn't cheap enough to be worth thinking about if you already have a 3060ti/3070 class gpu. The 7900XT makes a lot more sense or the 6950XT if the cap between it and the 7900XT is big enough price wise. Why the 4070ti doesn't cost the same or slightly cheaper as the 6950XT is just mind bugling as it would be able to be recommended a whole lot more at that price point.

Sidenote: Prices are still garbage.. but this is what we have to work with.

If you don't like DLSS/FSR etc then the card is good. It's the price that sucks. Should be £499. £599 at a stretch.

As mentioned, you get loads of vram too and we know how important that is these days :D

Thanks for the advice, out of curiosity, this whole VRAM situation is it just one big troll or is it a genuine factor? I keep seeing people talking about the extra vram but then doing smileys like its just a joke :D, but is it actually important or not? This is coming from someone who isnt too clued up on it. Thanks again.

That happens because we have now had multiple threads locked due to vram discussion.

It started with the is 10gb enough on the 3080 thread. My thoughts were, if that card had more vram Nvidia would never have priced it so competitively and I would never have got it for under £600 after selling the codes that came with it. That was in 2020 as I recall.

Today if you are buying a card and you intend to keep it long term and don't like DLSS/FSR which help reduce vram usage then really the minimum amount one should go for us 16GB. To be honest with the prices these companies try and command for these cards 16GB should be the bare minimum on them.

Be careful in these parts. You will get people on each side if the camp trying to give advice based on their biases (whether they realise it or not).

I personally don't care for either company and buy what fits my needs and what I fancy. I also try and give advice based what the users needs are. In your case if you are not into RT either than currently the 7900 XT is a no brainer.

It's a real problem with 8GB GPUs especially 3070/3070ti in upcoming games. The last of us part 1's performance tanks thanks to too little VRAM and the situation will only get worse. Some of these GPUs are £600-£700 to buy new today and they can't manage 1080p with ultra settings! See link from Hardware unboxed.

Hardware just been talking about the 3070/ti vram issue, especially when it comes to hogwarts, its not just a dog but a dog with fleas. and nvidia doesnt learn or cares as isnt the 4060/ti about to launch with 8gb as well?

The best visual settings for Hogwarts (until they patch it) sit inside 8GB at 1440p, a bit hairy at 4K but the 3070 isn't really a 4K card for this generation of games anyhow.

Currently turning on all ultra settings with ray tracing results in worse image quality than a mixture of mostly high with a couple of ultra settings in the game.

Having 32GB RAM still seems to be somewhat advantageous in the game for some reason even with the settings optimised and patch that reduces RAM requirements.

are the days of the 70/ti over then in AAA games?, as theres other examples of struggling, are nvidia going to go down the road of showcasing RT for the 4060/ti etc, as with 8gb surely its a dead duck for RT?

As a long time 3060 12GB owner all of this has been making me incredibly smug lately. 30+fps mins that actually beat the 3070 slightly at 1440p - can't complain! https://www.techpowerup.com/review/the-last-of-us-benchmark-test-performance-analysis/4.html
