3070FE to 7900xt

In the same boat, upgrading my 3070ti FE to either a 4070 ti or 7900xt. Can't decide if I prefer the features of the RTX or the Vram on the AMD.

Now wondering if I have made the right choice with my 3070FE medium to long term. No issues now but it sounds like VRAM may be of concern going forward. They still fetch a good price second hand and 3090s can be had second hand for ~£300 more. Tempting.

Considering it too with my 3070 which I just want more because of vr. But, don't think I can drop a grand on a new GPU no way so I may have to wait.

It's a real problem with 8GB GPUs especially 3070/3070ti in upcoming games. The last of us part 1's performance tanks thanks to too little VRAM and the situation will only get worse. Some of these GPUs are £600-£700 to buy new today and they can't manage 1080p with ultra settings! See link from Hardware unboxed.
I’ve managed really nice experience in TLOU with my 60ti at High setttings @1440p. Fps 60-90 no jitteriness. Albeit my vram requirement is at 8.4gb but the game doesn’t mind I don’t have it.

6800XT would made more sense, but don't know the rest of your system... A lot of recent games are heavily CPU limited.....

It's already a three year old card anyway, I'm holding off for as long as I can. Thanks to DLSS almost everything is perfectly playable for now on a 3080FE, and 10GB vram isn't causing any issues.

At least during the pandemic you could still get cards at somewhat reasonable msrp if you could find them... This is worse imo... lol

I'm thinking of doing similar having sold my 3070.

Seems to be the only card that would give a significant increase in performance and vram without being absurdly expensive.

Spending so much on the 4070ti with 12gb makes me a little concerned. If I'm spending so much I'd likely keep it a while so 20gb seems more sensible.

I'd thought about the 6950 but the power draw really is massive on that, and the ray tracing is very poor. At least the 7900 ray tracing perf isn't too far off the 4070ti's.

Still, £800 feels too much. Might wait till one can be had from a reputable retailer for nearer £700.
