I was just looking on autotrader and an RS4 2001 X reg close to £20k!

Yeah I was going to suggest an S4 at least but then reliased that would be dumb as running costs again would be rather high :(

knowing dealers like to take the **** with there "conservative part ex prices" I doubt there going to offer you 13k. i'd say around 12 - 12.5k to be on the more subtle side of a dealers thinking.

Many reputable dealers will give you Glass's book value for a decent condition car. This would put it at approximately £13k.

It varies between dealers too, one offered me 10k for my Mini Cooper S, but the dealers I eventually traded mine in for gave me 11.5k thats a big difference.

Unfortunately 3 Series don't fetch very close to guide price at the min,.

The market is absolutely swamped with them.

I got mine about £2.5k below book price with less miles.

Going to sell my car & need to know what to expect....as in what I should ask for if I sell it private & if I part exchange it - what to expect from a Dealer.

Car in my sig, 330ci sport, 245bhp remapped, Nov 02, manual, 44,075 miles, FBMWSH (7k till next service), HK Sound, leather, 12 mot, 4 tax. Perfect other than very very slight dink in one door (£80 to fix).

I know I'll get more selling private but I really HATE having to deal with idiots so more interested I think in the part ex figure tbh. Unless I'm going to get violently butt-rapped by a dealer I'd really like to part ex and do a nice clean hassle-free swap.

As for the replacement - it's likely to be gob smackingly boring. I've convinced myself that the way forward is to get a boring economical spacious workhorse for work and family outings/holidays etc & then buy a weekend toy.

The latest Glass's guide prices for your model are

Excellent condition:
£12850

Average condition:
£11450

Below average condition: (normal trade/auction price)
£10150

Depending on what you get and where from you could see the top figure in PX.

You'll never ever get 50mpg out of a 320d touring unless you drive with a feather strapped to the accelerator. They really range from low to mid 40s especially when carrying, and don't be fooled by the boot. You'd be lucky to fit two bikes in there. If its luggage carrying you need, why not go for the 5 series a 525d or similar. Shame you have to sell it :(

because they are ten a penny atm and loads of corporates are ditching them for new models. I might also risk getting a limb chopped off here but looking at the new coupes the E46 seems dated now the E39 even more so.

Congratulations, you just won a recommendation of...

BMW 320d Sport Touring

50mpg, comfort, lug half the house around and no horrible Honda interiors and cheap flimsey body panels!

I've ran a 320d Saloon for a couple of weeks and driven normaly you are lucky to get over 40mpg, the trip computer is at least 4mpg out from brim fillling it. It wasn't even what I would class quick it was pretty laggy pulling away with its auto box, the i drive system was also annoying however I liked the radar view from the parking sensors when you were reversing.

I'm not up to speed on BMW E numbers however it was the current model 3 series E90 ? I've also used a Accord and its interiror was better built and the leather better quailty not sure on the door panels though.

I do however suspect the older 3 Series has a better built interior never been in one long enough to make a judgement on it however the plastic looked better quailty. I would also miss out the 320d I'm sure the 330d offers similair fuel comsumption however is a whole load faster on the occasions I've driven one in a 5 series however again the engine is laggy low down the 3L Audi TDI engine is much better in this respect however the 535/335d engine is a notch above it.

For a good cheap family load lugger a TDCI Mondeo Estate would be a better buy if you are also buying a sporty weekend car as you could get a low mileage example still under warratny compared to a high mileage diesel BMW which is likly out of warranty.

Agree, Mondeo is a very good option here. Good strong Pug engine with far better diesel technology behind it over the dated x20d unit which BMW will just not redevelop (or get re-developed as its not their engine anyway). Remember though, Autos munch a fair bit out of diesel economy and it puts them in a higher tax bracket. a fully loaded 330d touring over a long spirited drive will see around 30mpg which I deem rather poor, the 320d would average 40mpg at a guess.

Mondeo's don't use Peugeot engines yet, the TDCi's in the Mondy are derived from the Transit engine range.

Don't really think you can call the BMW 20d dated, the latest version in the 1 Series has 177BHP which is fantastic for a 2.0 engine, when you consider the early 30d's only made 184BHP with 2 extra cylinders and 50% more capacity.

Test drove a Civic ctdi thingy today, seemed ok. I had to laugh when the salemen told me it was "pretty quick". Umm yeah right. :p

Got it onto the dual carriageway & it reported 65 mpg.

Not sure about boot size, need to take my suitcases to the dealer.

If you want to save money then having 2x cars surely isnt't the way to go is it?

2x fuel
2x insurance costs
2x road tax
2x MOT's

Just buy a fast,economical tourer/estate

It's been said before but a 530d sport touring would fit the bill superbly.

My bad, just I heard the new jag diesel which is a TDCi unit was derived from Pug but with Delphi injection.

Agree, the x20d isnt dated as such but BMW just up its power and stick an extra cat in to make it Euro IV compliant. The unit itself is catching up on the best part of 8-10 years.

This thread makes me cry.

Amazing build quality doesn't turn me on. Sure I can appreciate how well put together the E46 is, but it's never going to give me a hard-on.

I can happily trundle around in a average car Mon to Fri that does all the boring things well and economically, if that means it frees up cash for a 2nd car and also means that 2nd car can be open top/2 seats/thirsty as a mofo etc etc. 2nd car will cost zip as it'll only cover 4,000 miles a year.

Bear in mind i'll be saving money on fuel, tax, insurance, servicing, repairs, tyres, brakes.
I'm convinced that will fund a 2nd car if I can get something that will do 50mpg average.
