330d advice & tips thread

You'd be completely wrong, as we aren't yanks. It's always been 'beemer' over here until the internet got popular and people started saying 'ass' and other such american words.

So just why is a BMW car called a 'bimmer' not a 'beemer' or 'beamer'?

The answer in part lies in knowing some BMW history and what came first.

All real BMW enthusiasts know that BMW got a big start on two wheels, what many call the real BMWs.

In those days, BMW motorcycles were quite active in racing, and one of their competitors at the track was often the BSA bikes.

Well as things would have it, a track slang developed, and the BMWs were usually referred to as 'beemers' and the BSAs were referred to as 'beesers'.

So, of course for any true enthusiast, there is no way that a BMW car could be called a 'beemer', so they were called 'bimmers'.

Unfortunately, in the US and Canada, and perhaps other countries, there was a time (kind of still is) where for various reasons, a BMW owner was considered an upwardly mobile person, and of course due to the fun in driving their BMWs most all of them had big grins on their faces.

Hence it is little surprise that the non enthusiast types out there incorrectly labeled BMW cars and their owners as 'beamers' or 'beemers'.

BSA and BMW bikes raced a lot in America?

What? how on earth do they get 'no way it would be called a beemer' from that first comment?

The stock audio in the E90 is just as rubbish though I had a 320i M Sport Auto for a few days years ago and that had a cracking stereo. The 320i ES though which I had for 6 weeks had a stereo as bad as my E39.
Easily sorted with the BMW Alipne upgrade kit - about £300, consisting of an amplifier, mid range speakers and tweeters.

The E90 should never have been allowed to leave the factory with such a crap system as standard!

How many miles are you doing? As someone who likes their cars, is diesel neccessary? Theres a lot of room between ~20mpg in the scoob, and ~35mpg out of a x30d...

I'm doing a lot of miles in my Z4 atm, not hanging around, and getting 27-29mpg (300-330 miles to a tank).

Obviously not as much of a drivers car as the VX was, but maybe a decent compromise t saving you havig to use the black pump...? Not a bad time of year to be buying a convertible either...

If im honest with you mate for the moment and over the winter im quite happy just to sit back and relax. Ive had decent quick petrol cars for the last 4 years and just fancy something a bit more chilled that does a decent MPG. If im honest i also wanted something quicker than the scoob and to be honest at the moment i simply cannot afford that (RS4 / M3 etc) So am happy to have the dreaded D for a year while i pay off a credit card and save a little money. I want to get around the country more next year, see more friends and do more things and the 330D should enable me to do this.

I like the Z4s but would want the Z4m coupe which isnt really affordable to me at the moment.

Get your impreza remapped with long distance touring in mind and you will see 28mpg with easy on long journies.

This was another factor, i was thinking about keeping the scoob and modding it but the expese is huge £££ ! Just for 350 BHP i was looking at over £1200 and for 400 £2500

It made much more sense just to sell the car and if i want to go in that direction buy another which has allready had the work completed :)

Oh come on, it's not THAT bad!

It certainly is.

The speakers themselves are really good it's just the head unit thatc omes on all BMWs that's just pants for power and fidelity. Hence why the Pioneer I have in mine makes a world of difference.

I think you'll find that both the head unit and the speakers are crap. Changing the head units makes a certain amount of difference, changing both makes a massive amount.

The problem with the Z4M(R>C) is that CSL wheels fit and are therefore a must... :D

The chances of coming away from a set of wheels and a small drop without a bill of ~£2k is slim... Plus it'll cost you twice the amount to buy in first place, and put you squarely in Boxster S territory, and I can't make my mind up which I'd prefer...

Back OT, is an E60 530d M Sport in budget / of interest?
