£350 for Beginners DSLR?

The 50mm is a must have lens, but you will need another zoom lens of some sort, which can easily be bought for under £100 or so.

Atleast get a D80, due to the motor.

Yeah the 50mm f1.8 will work with the D80 fine (on a D60 it will not autofocus).
You do really need a zoom lens also. If you're on the cheap you could go for the standard Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 but if you have a bit more cash get the Nikon 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 as it's a really versatile lens.

50mm is fixed at 50mm.

You want something like mentioned above an 18-55 (generally a kit lens) and something else.

D80 is a good camera to get, Nikon wise as it can AF on all lenses.

I wouldn't cancel out the Canon's, their budget cameras all AF, which is an advantage over the cheap D40/x, D50, D60 etc.

I take it you've gone into shops and played with the Nikons and Canons?

I was set on getting the 400D from reading on the web, until I went into a store and played with the D40X, it felt completely 'right' in my hands, unlike the 400D.

Looking at cameras on spec and price is ok, but you really have to get to play with them to understand just which is best for you. You don't want to end up with something that feels wrong to you, even if it does have everything you want at the right price.

You can get a D200 for around that, body only.

Id haggle that.

Theres a body from the US going for about £200 (not inc postage), which could be worth looking at, then buy lenses.

That does seem like a good deal, new you're looking at:

Body - £450

SD cards ~ £40 for 5x2gb

Battery grip - £90

Spare battery - £25 assuming it's official

50mm f1.8 - £70

£675 + the books new

So I presume the 50mm will really limit me for the time being until I can buy a new lense?

-Matt

I started off with only a 50mm f1.8 prime for 2 weeks before I got my zooms. It's not as hard as some people describe, you'll just have to be creative and use your legs more often. As in you'll find yourself walking up and now, near and far just to frame that shot.

You'll have to think abit more.

However, for people new to photography - a kit zoom is much better as you'll play around with different focal length and find what you'll need more of before investing in a better lens.

I'm a strong advocate of shooting with just a prime when you're starting out—it'll force you to think more about your composition—it's just that 50mm on APS-C is a bit too long to be useful as a general, walkabout lens IMO. See how it goes, though; you can always pick up a cheapo zoom lens if you're feeling really restricted by it.

Hey Mate,

I have always been a fan of the canon DSLR's but my advise to anyone that is looking for a DSLR the nly way to find one the you like/get on with is to try them for that sort of cash i would be looking round the 400D sort of range i think that you will like it.

Good Luck

Adz:)

Just to be safe,

this lens is compatiable with the D80?
