Hey all.
I have a 3570k at 4.4ghz, mid range MSI motherboard. 4 x 4gb ram and a 290x (awaiting delivery of a 980ti).

My pro Googling suggest that an upgrade to a 3770k wouldn't do anything for me. As far as I can tell I'd gain hyperthreading. I'd only be gamimg with it.

My rig is a bit old (2014) and has served me well.

I'm fairly knowledgable on PC hardware.
Any opinions on the cpu would be appreciated :).

what games?
how long do you intend to keep your current computer?
any more budget to spend? or is a 3770k upgrade at the top of your budget?
ryzen 3000 coming soon in the summer so 3770k could lose relevance in the next 12-18 months for the latest AAA titles

just wait imo. no point upgrading to the 3770k.
oc ryzen 2nd gen has same single core performance as a 3770k.
and 3570k isn't really going to bottleneck a 980ti unless you're playing a highly multithreaded game (like bfv/ac:o)

(i'm playing on a 3770k @4.5 with a 1080ti fwiw)

980ti will be fine for ultra wide 1440p so long as you're not looking for >100fps gaming on ultra settings.
60fps should be ok

Agreed with the not bothering option. Won't be worth the hassle in anything but Battlefield really. I'd but the pennies towards a new build.

Probably not far from the truth. Single threaded performance when you compare Ryzen at 4 or 4.1Ghz to Ivy bridge at 4.6-4.8Ghz isn't going to much different.

It's not the same single core performance then if you have to clock the Intel chip higher? Surely?

It was a genuine query, I've never seen anybody compare 2nd gen Ryzen to a 3rd gen i5 before. The added sarcasm was a bit unnecessary.
Ah my apologies then :(
But yes, in terms of ipc, ryzen+ is approx between broadwell + kaby lake (more kaby lake than broadwell)
Ryzen 1st gen is approx between Haswell + broadwell.
Unfortunately both ryzen and ryzen+ don't have the clock speed to take advantage of. Hopefully ryzen2 coming soon can rectify that

I am in a very similar position to the op, seems we may have bought similar bundles around the same time 2012ish maybe. (3570k, Z77-D3H @4.4)

I feel the need to upgrade now but I am going to hold out and see what the 3rd gen Ryzen brings
