Is there any difference in picture quality?

My mate hasnt got component in so had to use the adaptor.

Cheers

If he hasn't got a TV with component then he can't use it,simple as that.If you are talking about the scart adaptor that comes with the 360,that is for the composite(yellow, red, white) and is the worst connection available.

If all he has is the scart the tell him to get a RGB scart cable, even thats better than the crappy composite.Either that or lay off the beer for a bit and get a HDTV which is what next-gen consoles is all about.

It is a HDTV. Seems I got confused though, he had component, just no sound input, some wierd phono jack or something

That doesn't sound right...there should be red/white stereo RCA's, or perhaps a 3.5mm stereo jack at a pinch (unless we're talking about a monitor).

You sound a little confused...

Red / White / Yellow = Composite, SDTV. Plugging them into a SCART block will not give any picture difference, as it's still composite.

Red/Green/Blue = Component. These are for HDTV.

For audio, some TVs need a 'phono to 3.5mm adapter' to accept the signal. Others you can use the source from another line in on the TV.

What TV is it?

His TV 99% should have some sort of component input. If it doesn't have the standard Red/Green/Blue connections on the outside, then he'll probably have to connect it via the VGA port on the TV using a component => VGA cable. Or, buying the 360 Official VGA cable.

My LCD has its component connection via scart and is HD, it also has a seperate composite. There aren't that many TVs that do this. Mine is an Acer 26"

Yeah i've got an Acer too.I'm not sure many others do component through scart.

to cut through this a little bit he wants to work out whats going ona nd get the component plugged in asap as its not running at HD as it statnds which will look pap on a hdtv.
