360 DVD Playback (OMG How Poop?!)

I have used DVD playback on my old non-360 xbox via component on the Dell 2405FPW and quite frankly it poops all over it. The playback is 10x better on the old xbox than the 360! Also, dvd playback thru the PC on the Dell is faultless as well I have found. I supposed I should jus think about maybe trying out a VGA cable at some point. 1080p is not an option I can select with my current set up.

**EDIT** It may be worth noting that the playback of files from the HDD are perfectly fine. It is ONLY the playback of DVDs that has a poorer quality to them.
i dont think uve updated ** 360.. its used to be pants then it was updated and the difference between it and my oppo are small

On my Sharp 46" LCD, the 360 is a very good DVD player over component, it seems better then using my Denon 3910 Upscaling DVD Player, The main improvements are it's sharpness and colour rendition all seem flawless to me..

My brother has the 360 HD-DVD and a PS3, and tbh Blu-ray/HD-DVD look better, but the size of screen (52" in his case) still is the limiting factor.. HD-DVD looks the same as Blu-ray to us, but through the Projector, the HD-DVD and Blu-ray films look pretty stunning..

Horses for courses, but as mentioned, it does sound like your dell monitor is crap at up scaling component sources..

i have the same monitor and i must say the xbox360 does a good job via vga mate. ditch those components cos they aint that hot

I know i'm probably alone but I prefer the colours I get with my 360 via component rather than VGA.

Personal choice.

I think a lot of people would agree with you there mate, VGA is a little washed out on the 360 compared to Component :)

I thought the playback was pretty good. However i do find games to be not as clear as i thought they be? Is this down to my TV? Its just a crappy Sanyo 26inch TV. Will a HDTV be better?

Yeah that is the main difference that an HDTV offers, clarity. It's like playing games on the PC at 800 by 600 and bumping them up to 1240 or 1300 by somthing. It is quite a jump in clarity.

Dude if you don't already have one, get an RGB cable it will make a big difference in clarity and colour. The difference with the composite that came with the 360 and an RGB cable is like night and day.

Obviously you can go with the official cable for like £20, but why not just buy an unofficial one for like £3- £5. That is what I did and i'm really happy I did.

I use a big SDTV which I bought a couple of years ago and I have no intention of getting an HDTV soon. Atleast not until HD media/burners etc are really cheap.

I am a little lost here. The component cable on the 360 is what you connect to your tv to give you your HD is it not? And plugging the VGA end in, is just a waste of the HD is it not.

Someone explain this to me please lol

Composite - Standard Definition, the cable that comes with the core + part of the premium cable (yellow plug, uses scart adapter)
RGB - Best picture you can get for Standard Definition (bought seperately)
Component - Other half of the premium cable, High Definition up to 1080p (or 1080i, can't remember)
VGA - High Definition up to 1080p (bought seperately)

VGA and Component seem to be quite equally matched with some people saying VGA is better, others think Component is better. It seems to come down to the individual TV in question to determine the best connection between these two.

If you have a standard definition TV you definitely want the RGB cable, well worth it.

Latest update allows 1920x1080 for 1080p :)
For the VGA cable also?
Dunno, I ain't got my VGA cable hooked up anymore can't bebothered to test it either, I know the update allowed 1080p, but even before the update I was running 1080.
TV won't do 1080p.
