Recently I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my PC but there are no PC games (with the exception of TF2) that I am looking forward too. I have had an Xbox 360 before when they first came out but sold it on these forums as I got bored with the games that were out at the time. Now I quite fancy a 360 (again) or a PS3, but each have their strong and weak points - the way I see it is:

360
Games that I want: Forza 2, The Darkness, BioShock, GTA IV & Oblivion.
Plus points: Cheaper than PS3, Has an official VGA/DVI cable (My TV only has DVI which supports HDCP), Microsoft havent shafted Europe as much as Sony, Elite version is coming out soon - could pre-order that.
Bad points: Overheating/GPU/3RD issue, Sounds like a jet, HD-DVD drive is an (expensive) extra, only 20GB HDD.

PS3
Games that I want: Ninja Gaiden Sigma, GTA IV, Oblivion, The Darkness, MGS4.
Plus points: Has blu-ray built in, new bundle coming out soon, nice and quiet, can run F@H, 60GB HDD, I havent had one before (could be a nice change!)
Bad points: Sony have shafted Europe, hasnt got an official VGA/DVI cable - needs an expensive work-around, Sony might be dropping support for the 60GB version, I havent had one before (could turn out to be a lemon).

So if you had the cash to buy either of them at the moment, which would you go for? I really cant decide, I would be taking a gamble with the PS3 as I dont know what its OS is like and if PSN is any good at all but then again I got bored with the 360's games, although it was just a dry patch as theres a few that I want now - Also would it be worth waiting for the 360 Elite version?

All input appreciated :)

Craig

I don't think the Elite is worth the extra money.
There are rumours of a 360 price drop 1st week of August.
I thought that "the darkness" was on 360 too?
Bluray - is it worth it? I can see the point of DVD over VHS but on current screens is there genuinely a noticeable improvement from HD-DVD or BR over a quality DVD?
I like my 360, I like the friends system the achievements and Live! in general.
The PS3 is a large sum of money, it might be good value in terms of getting a BR drive but that only really matters if BR is important to you.

theres loads of threads about this

and afaik you can get a dvi cable for the ps3 and it will work with any HDCP supporting screen so youd be fine

have a look through the other threads to be fair

Id get a 360 premium, i dont think the elite is worth it. You have an established set of high quality titles already out with good games coming out every month this year. Couple this with outstanding online play and a new 3 year warranty for the 3 red light issue and theres really no reason not to.

i'd personally say you can see the difference but it doesn't seem anywhere near as big a jump as vhs - dvd on current screens. is it worth it? nope for a standalone, possibly for a ps3 but only if your into your home cinema experiences.

i've got them both and currently if i had to choose just one i would go with the 360 because it just has more available at the moment, the ps3 is a great bit of kit but i'd say there'll be much more for it in about 6 months time.

btw i got the darkness imported for the ps3 and it's class but i miss getting all the achievements like my mate currently is, accomplishments just aren't the same ;(

One quick note i noticed on the rainforest site if buy oblivion on the PS3 you get a free HDMI lead.

Both great consoles, both have great games, PS3 defiantly wont be a lemon, since the price drop (lol) in the US it has increased sales by well over 200% and in many US stores there now out of stock! Not sure the Elite is worth the money if it was the new hardware revision then it would be but its not and i think its to close to the UK PS3 price if you include 2 games and another controller. As its already been said so many of these which one threads about on here just have a look. Maybe an idea to talk to people who have swapped the 360 for a PS3 and Vica Versa.

Blu-ray doesnt look any better than DVD on SDTVs - you won't see the 1920x1080 goodness on a TV that does 640x480. That 200% figure was anecdotal by a Sony rep wasn't it? Seeing as it was only a day after the price drop (which really isnt a drop if you look at it in the grand scheme of things)

PS3 of course. Yes blu-ray is noticable at screens of 32" and above. Just watch planet earth its awesome.

As every month goes by it makes more sense to get a PS3. The games are coming and there not far away.

at the moment the ps3 is in the same position as the 360 when it first came out with not that many games . give it another 6 months and you will see more games coming out but ask yourself can you wait those 6 or more months for games to come out??? also look at the games coming to both console and see which console has the most games that appeal too you

360.

EDIT - I just re read your OP. You once had one and now you dont. Why bother buying another if you once sold it?! I dont think 360 ever had a period of no good games? Are you sure you don have £xx burning a hole in your pocket? Just save the money and read some good novels.

I have a 50" TV but it doesn't do 1080p. So would I see any benefit in BR over DVD? I don't think so. I also saw some graphical representation as to what the human eye can detect at given distances. Basically you'd have to sit very close to actually be able to tell that there were extra pixels.
So is the BR aadvantage at 1080p genuinely an advantage or is it just willy waving over numbers? I am not convinced that I'd see any picture advantage sitting 12 feet away between DVD on my TV and 1080p on a capable screen of the same size.

Planet Earth is pretty awesome on any decent DVD player and HD capable large screen.

At the moment I would say 360.

-It has way more stuff on the market place
-Its a lot cheaper
-It has loads of games coming out this year
-Xbox Live is miles ahead of the PSN

Decision is yours really, but soon the 360 is getting its insides reworked with a 65nm CPU+GPU (will reduce heat+make it more reliable) and another heatsink so that could be a reason to wait for it.

If I already didnt have both of them I would wait until early 2008 when there will be better choice and hopefully will be cheaper. Decision is yours though.
