360 or PS3? Cant decide...

So? They are using up more space, big flaming deal.

Personally I think it is a big deal, probably the best function Sony have incorporated into the PS3. Not only will it eliminate the possibility of multiple discs for games in the future, and also you will be able to buy games with additional content on the disk, i,e Stranglehold & Heavenly Sword.

I would get the ps3 as it has the blu ray player there and ready. the 360 as standard cannot play any next gen films without an external dvd drive.

dont bother with the elite xbox. if it didnt overheat, didnt chew disks and came with the hddvd drive built in i would buy one myself, but as it doesnt do any of this i won't. (not very elite at all imo they havnt solved the previous problems)
The current 360 has better games than the ps3 at the moment, yet as 1/3 of 360s like to **** up I would still get the ps3

No HD cables come with the PS3. So yes, HDMI-DVI, HDMI -HDMI, HDMI - component.

yes I know, just pointing out he would only really need the adapter (as well as the cable obviously) as he was giving the impression that he would need to spend a lot of money to get it hooked up to his TV.

I personally never had a problem with multiple discs, some of my favourite games of all time are on 2 or more discs. And what is this additional content for those 2 games you mentioned?

I have a 50" TV but it doesn't do 1080p. So would I see any benefit in BR over DVD? I don't think so. I also saw some graphical representation as to what the human eye can detect at given distances. Basically you'd have to sit very close to actually be able to tell that there were extra pixels.
So is the BR aadvantage at 1080p genuinely an advantage or is it just willy waving over numbers? I am not convinced that I'd see any picture advantage sitting 12 feet away between DVD on my TV and 1080p on a capable screen of the same size.

Planet Earth is pretty awesome on any decent DVD player and HD capable large screen.

I have a 50" TV, 'only' does 720p. I also have the HD-DVD drive for my 360, and yes, there is a very noticable difference between HD-DVD and regular DVD. Compared to HD, regular DVD looks soft, grainy and muddy.

Well stranglehold comes with the full HD version of Hard boiled on the Blue Ray, not sure with heavenly sword as its PS3 only it dont matter as it wont be on DVD9.

There was a question mark at the end of your sentance indicating you would like clarification. That's why I posted. :)

I wouldn't class £20 as a lot of money. ;)

It's not just me then. :D Is the external drive noisy too?

Well I do have a problem with multiple disks, when I'm sitting on the sofa playing the last thing I want to do is have to change disks, and tbh the last thing I would want to do is repeatedly is open and close the 360's DVD tray as there not exactly reliable (in my experience).

Heavenly Sword basically is a collectors edition, with behind the scenes footage etc, and as already mentioned Stranglehold has a HD film on the disk. Neither I care about but it's nice to know that we can and will get more for our money :)

Sorry I didnt mean in a 360vsPS3 comparison I was just saying that I personally had no problem with multiple discs. And I was genually interested in what the extra content is going to be, since I only got a PS3 2 days ago I virtually know nothing about the games I'm looking into buying :p
But on another note more space on 1 disc doesnt equal better games, since the lack of space problem is overcome with compression and multiple discs. Im actually very curious to see how much BioWare can fit on a single DVD9 with Mass Effect.

I would agree with the comment someone made about harddrives though, Microsoft were foolish not to include one with every 360 since it limits the developers options.

Here we go again :o I always make long posts about this topic, so please forgive me if i waffle on.

Right lets go for the elite first. At our place we are taking preorders on it priced at £329.99 for release day, obviously bundle deals will follow as we find them out. To me its a bit of a rip off, does the HDMI connection really make that much of a difference? It dooesnt seem to between my 360 and PS3 so i cant see it having much of an advantage over standard component on the premium 360. Secondly, the bigger hard drive? Will you want an OMG sized HDD? as far as im aware the PS3 will take almost any 2.5"(i think its 2.5") HDD, so you can easily put a bigger HDD into a PS3. But seriously will you fill 120GB on a console? Both the 360 and PS3 do media streaming, so there is no need to put your music onto your console, just stream it off your PC. And thirdly are you really willing to pay such a price premium over the premium 360 for the sake of a black console.

The 360 premium is an established console that should with any luck show some price drops when the elite is realsed. Our place does a premium with 3 games for £300, adn thatss £30 cheaper than an elite by itself, only difference being a smaller HDD, having to connect through composite and its a very 1980s beige colour.

Heres some things to consider though. Your looking at £300ish for a good bundle deal on te premium, will you want wireless? thatll be another £60 as you have to use the microsot wireless adapter. Will you want a weless headset? Those are around the £35 mark. You get the ethernet cables with the 360 premium and upwards for xbox live, and a wired headset, any extra goodies you will have to pay for.

As an example this is how much ive spent on hardware for the 360:
-Premium and PGR3 £270
-Wireless adapter £60
-Play and charge kit £15
-Wireless headset £35
-Xbox live 12 month subscription £40

Totals at £420 not including games i bought on top.

The 360 has an impressive lineup of games, and some more coming. To me Halo 3 is looking promising and Forza 2 is a really good game with plenty more to come.

Xbox live is brilliant, a lot better than the PS3s equivalent, although Sony are still working on improvong the PS3s online and offline capabilities. If you want a console for online then the 360 is definately the way to go at the minute.

Right, onto the PS3. Lets start with what it cost me initially upon purchase:
-Console £420 (release day console)
-Bluetooth headset £10
-HDMI Cable £10

Total of £440, only £20 more than it cost me for my 360, albeit minus the game. Online on the PS3 is free, so no subscription for that, and you can use any bluetooth headset, so you can buy a cheapy one or a good one, your choice. The PS3 also comes with wireless as standard on *** UK console, so no extra for that, and since the PS3 doesnt use AA batteries and comes with the powerpack internal (albeit you cant change it yourself) you dont need to buy a powerpack for it.

The PS3 comes with its blu ray player, to me the extra cost of the console was justified for that alone, and if your that way inclined you can install linux ono a PS3. Online the PS3 is not as good as xbox live, but its not too bad, if your coming from a PC then to be honest you probably would find a PS3 nice to use, but its not as simplistic as xbox live.

Games wise for the PS3 I dont see the problem, theres as steady stream getting released at the minute and more to come. Metal Gear Solid, Ninja Gaiden and Gran Turismo 5 are two major release game that dont seem to be going to the 360, but the 360 has PGR, Forza 2 and Halo so it kinda balances out.

To me, if you will be buying all the toys for the 360 then you might as well pay the little extra for the build quality, sleekness and technology the PS3 gives, but if your not requiring any extras such as wireless then save your cash and get the 360.

Obviously my listed prices are out slightly as better deals exist. But honestly compare the actual amounts you will spend on the two consoles before deciding, as IMO once youve added all your extras onto the two console they dont work out all that different.

To give you an idea of game coming out heres a list to compare the two consoles. To me theres little in it games wise. Obviously not all dates will be 100% correct, but it gives you an idea.

I wasnt doing a 360 vs PS3, I was just saying that as its BD you wont need to worry about changing disks on Heavenly Sword as its a PS3 only game. At one point Bioware did complain that the size of a DVD9 wasnt enough for Mass effect, I guess they found a work round or it could be on 2 discs?
I dont think many people have a problem changing disks, but all would probably rather not have too. Blue dragon is on 3 DVDs for the Japanese version i would think the Euro version would possibly be more for all the extra languages needed ie French, German, English, if the game was on the PS3 (which wont be) it would only need 1 BD.

But what games have you ever had to do that with? I am actually struggling to think of 1 through all the games I've ever played.

GTA for example you wouldnt have to since they would just put all the map data on all discs and just spread out the dialogue and cutscene data over the mutliple discs. So as you play through the game you would only have to switch once (or more, depending on how many discs) every so often. RPG's it was never a problem either, same with RTS (C&C on the PS1 Nod+GDI missions were just put on 2 different discs). The only game I could see it being a problem with is Oblivion style games, but then again you could just do the same as the GTA example. FPS it wouldn't be a problem either because they are very linear, either that or put single player on 1 disc and multiplayer on another disc.

So the only thing to take into account is peoples lazyness :p

Driver 3 on the PS2 got so annoying i actually couldnt be bothered to play it.

I believe the FF games on the PS2 had multiple disks, as stated already Blue Dragon on the 360 has more than 1 disk. Now I know most won't have an issue with this but to me it is a limitation, and will be a limitation for the developers as already stated by Bioware with Mass Effect.

Thats 1 disc isnt it? I bought my version on release day and I dont remember it being 2 discs, although I took it back the next day for a refund since it was an utter piece of **** :D so I could be wrong.

Im not trying to say DVD9 is better then Blu-ray just that multiple DVD9 discs are not such a big deal as some people make them out to be. By the time it will be a problem is when the next generation of consoles come out and then Microsoft will adopt either Blu-ray or HD-DVD as its format for games.

It will be a limtation yes, but it isnt so much right now and when it does eventually become one towards the end of the consoles life the next console will be just around the corner.

Nice post Stellios :)

When you put things like that the 360 and PS3 cost the same, the 360 has more games because it was on the scene first, the PS3 will have plenty of games in 6months time, the PS3 wont break.

You are correct about the PS3 using 2.5" HDD's. AFAIK the biggest you can get is 500gig. I have a 1TB NAS drive that my PS3 can see and I stream all my music and video etc. :)

melchy said:
I have both, if i could only have one it would be the 360.

Same here, and by a considerable margin. I wouldn't have picked up the PS3 at all if it wasn't such a decent Blu-ray player.

Right now there's not enough worth playing to justify the cost of a PS3 (imo anyways). In 6 months to a year I suspect things will be very different (there's some very tasty games on the way), but right now it's not all that.

Not particularly, it doesn't need to spin the disc as fast as a game DVD. You can still hear the 360's fans though :(
