360 or PS3? Cant decide...

Recently I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my PC but there are no PC games (with the exception of TF2) that I am looking forward too. I have had an Xbox 360 before when they first came out but sold it on these forums as I got bored with the games that were out at the time. Now I quite fancy a 360 (again) or a PS3, but each have their strong and weak points - the way I see it is:

360
Games that I want: Forza 2, The Darkness, BioShock, GTA IV & Oblivion.
Plus points: Cheaper than PS3, Has an official VGA/DVI cable (My TV only has DVI which supports HDCP), Microsoft havent shafted Europe as much as Sony, Elite version is coming out soon - could pre-order that.
Bad points: Overheating/GPU/3RD issue, Sounds like a jet, HD-DVD drive is an (expensive) extra, only 20GB HDD.

PS3
Games that I want: Ninja Gaiden Sigma, GTA IV, Oblivion, The Darkness, MGS4.
Plus points: Has blu-ray built in, new bundle coming out soon, nice and quiet, can run F@H, 60GB HDD, I havent had one before (could be a nice change!)
Bad points: Sony have shafted Europe, hasnt got an official VGA/DVI cable - needs an expensive work-around, Sony might be dropping support for the 60GB version, I havent had one before (could turn out to be a lemon).

So if you had the cash to buy either of them at the moment, which would you go for? I really cant decide, I would be taking a gamble with the PS3 as I dont know what its OS is like and if PSN is any good at all but then again I got bored with the 360's games, although it was just a dry patch as theres a few that I want now - Also would it be worth waiting for the 360 Elite version?

All input appreciated :)

Buy an Xbox 360, simple, it is better value than the PS3 at the moment, has a better online gaming experience and unless there are some real must have titles you want for the PS3, the 360 already has a huge back catalogue of games (some you may not have even thought about) and 95% of games will be cross platform anyway.

You can nomaly find a nice 360 bundle deal in any good shop now. Grab a 360 as there are some good games out already and some coming out in the next few months and toward the end of the year then wait till the PS3 has some good exclusive games availible then you can do a trade in.

If you can live with the bad points - reliabilty and noisy drive - then go for the 360 as the games are the best by far at the moment.

Just remember that these negatives are 'real' concerns.

My 3rd 360 (which Ive treated with 'kid gloves' and only had for 10 months) gave me the 3 red lights yesterday after playing Dirt for 5 minutes - I was almost expecting it.

Im currently enjoying the relative silence of my PS3.

However, given the 3 year warranty, I'd still choose the 360 if I was going to be a 'single console' owner.

Currently the 360. For me to even considor switching there would ned to be a load more gamnes released for the PS3, as at the monute there are only a handful compared to the 360. In 6 or 7 months will be the real test, when there should be more games out, imo. Had a go of the Ps3 and it seems very similar to the 360 in terms of gfx/gameplay.

I just did a comparison of a DVD (480p), upscaled DVD (on PS3 FW1.8 and above at 1080i), and a separate HD trailer. All on a 32" LCD.

I actually sat and watched a DVD at 480p and thought...this picture looks grainy. I never thought I would say that about DVD.

You don't need a huge TV to benifit from HD, The PS3's functionality for having these features is a real bonus for me.

Actually I find that watching a DVD on an LCD@480p will always look more grainy than watching it on a SDTV.

Get a 360 tbh, lot cheaper and more available for it currently. 360 and ps3 hardware are pretty simlar in terms of power just the ps3 has a blu ray player.
Think the 360 will keep up with a consistent stream of good games.

im getting a 360 Tues. My mobile contract is up (currently paying £35 a month). The link are offering a 360 premium with 1 game with a new £35 a month contract (500 mins + unlimited txt) so well worth it for a £280 console i was going to buy anyway :)

True, LCD's can struggle with normal resolution TV broadcasts, so I guess it may be the same with normal DVD's to an extent. Too many variables so maybe my comparison was a little unfair.

But this is getting a bit off topic so I'll stop now! ;)

Back on topic....

I would say it's really down to personal preference, and what your looking for out of either console.

XBox 360

+ Great online gaming
+ Extensive number of games, some now to be had very cheap
+ Excellent controller (inc rumble)
+ Plenty of demo's on XBL
- Costly extras (wireless adapter/steering wheel)
- Unreliable (25+ days turnaround on repairs?)
- Noisy
- Poor DVD playback (IMO)

+/- a lot of the games arriving/out are either FPS or RPG's, very similar to PC games.

PS3

+ Reliable
+ Quiet
+ Excellent DVD playback
+ Blu-Ray
+ Free Online
+ Web browser + built in wifi

- Cost
- Lack of software at present
- Controller is light & IMO not great for FPS games

I opted for the PS3 in the end, as I wanted it's media capabilities and am happy to wait for the games. Also as mine is in the lounge the online side of gaming I'm not too interested in (Wife thought I looked a ***** talking down a headset in front of the TV) I'm also sick of FPS games, and really wanted a console which I felt will in the future would offer me a more varied catalogue of games, and finally and more important to me I wanted a reliable console which was a lot quieter :)
Although I have to wait for the games I tend only to have 2-3 at a time which I am happily playing through and don't feel I need anymore (especially as one of them is currently Oblivion)

So the real question is what do you want from the console, now or in the future?

P.S. You will need a HDMI-DVI adapter for the PS3 on your TV I believe?

bargain!!!

I think you are missing an important point. The fact that Blu-Ray and HDD is standard on all the systems, this means developers can utilise all this extra space. Add in the Cell (proved to be faster than current 2x4 cpus), and developers really have no limits. We aren't seeing the impact on games this has yet, but over the years we will definetly see games not possible on the 360.

For the love of god I wish people would stop saying this the Cell is so badly overhyped.

Of course developers have limits, the CPU cannot make up for when the graphics card starts falling short on games.

Games like GTAIV, MGS4 and Killzone have already been confirmed to be utilising the extra space
So? They are using up more space, big flaming deal.
