I wouldn't touch dedicated PC speakers..
What you want is something like the Sony HT-SS500..

internet prices are £120, has optical/coax input..
I know you don't want '5 speakers', so either don't plug the centre/rears in and select 2.1 as you audio mode.. or double up your speakers, i.e put your rear left on top of the front left, etc..
Then, when you want to take advantage of positional surround sound, which can be awesome in some games, you just need to put the speakers where they should be....
I've been through lots of PC speakers, until I acquired a similar setup to what I've suggested, and considering the price.. they are truly excellent VFM..
Other then, I agree with neocon, a cheap amp/speakers will sound infinitely better then any 2.1 setup..

if on a budget i'd sooner recommend a stereo amp and two nice bookshelf speaker than a cheap 5.1 set. did you ever consider that? of course not, you just seem to think all i do is tell people to spend lost of money
