Hi there, ever since the AMD presentation I have been racking my brains about my next upgrade.

I currently have a 4690k.

I want to upgrade, I only game on my PC, at 4k/60hz & 1080p/144hz.

The 3600 can be had for £179 and the 5600x is £289.99.

The 5600x is 62% more expensive for what is probably around 20% increase in gaming performance.

Now my brain is saying that the 3600 is by far the better value CPU, which could be had even cheaper with sales this week. And perhaps when the 5600x is released. That's a no brainer.

But the 5600x is newer tech, will be 20% faster, perhaps even more as time goes on. I do upgrade every 5-6 years on average. So £100 over 5 years is only £20 per year more if you work it out like that.

I just need some advice on what you guys would do in my situation.

I don't want to buy something then regret it later on!

I think the 5600X could be more than 20% faster than a 3600.

:( 11.8% higher performance for 26% higher price:

I think the 5600X will be a fair bit more better than the 3600 than just 19%.

I think the nearest 6c amd part to it in terms of performance is the 3600XT and probably the 5600X is 19% on that. As someone pointed out 3600XT is £230.

The question is 290 vs 230 is £60 in it. Do you want that extra performance for £60.

and if you are considering 3600, are you happy with that for now and needing to go up to 5600X or 5800X down the line. Etc etc.

personally (I have done this myself) pick up 3900 or 3900x on offer and be happy for a long time. Then take a view down the line. But then gaming is not my priority. More cores help me more. So for you 4K60 then the 5600X might be the most suitable.

I can't help you because this is exactly my conundrum! Sorry mate.

You reckon? maybe it's worth waiting for reviews then?

It's still too expensive.

I was planning on upgrading my 3600x but not at these prices.

I paid £190 for my 3600x.

If the 5600x was £220 it would be worth it but any more and your better off with a 3600, get the xt if you really want a bit more performance

Unfortunately priced them too high.

Yep. I get them trying to build some more margin in but we're missing half the product range (the good value half!).

The 5600x should have been £249 UK but I can see why they priced it where they did. The 10600k in US is $299 RRP and it selling at around $275 and so matching that which is their largest market segment. The fact the 10600k is £249 in UK is irrelevant unfortunately. But that should be the comparison made on prices, so is the 5600x for what is being touted at 13% performance over the 10700k worth the £40 premium.

The performance from last gen AMD to this gen AMD will be around the similar performance shown for the 3900x to 5900x in my view so take that as you will. Do you want to pay £289 for what would be around 25-30% performance increase over the 3600. Personally I would pay the difference because 25-30% is a decent increase.

@Brumboy maybe I've missed something it but what gpu will you be using?

I only ask because the price difference between 3600 and 5600 is quite substantial and could free up funds to get a better gpu, which would make far bigger difference than going for the 5600
