3700x upgrade

I'm also on the 3700x. Would like some clarity on whether or not OP's problem really is due simply to the CPU being old. Mine serves me fine still although I don't think I've played any UE5 games to be fair.

I saw noticeable bottlenecking in some games with a 3060ti and a 3700X, that problem became substantially worse when I upgraded to a 4070.

I switched my CPU for a 5800X3D and saw a night and day difference, even in games that didn't appear to max out my CPU usage, especially in terms of minimum framerates. The 3700X was an excellent CPU back when it came out in terms of value, but people seem to forget that it was also 10-20% slower than its main competition at the time, aka the now 6 year old Intel 9900K.

Hey OP, what did you decide to do in the end and what was the result?

I'm currently running with the same Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor and have an eye on upgrading my old GeForce 2060 Super to the new 50x series (probably 5070ti or 5080 if I can streatch) later this year when the supply issues have been sorted.

Couple of Q's really.

Did upgrading your CPU have a massive effect and what did you swap for?
Presumably if I'm keeping the same Mo-Bo, I need to stick to a Ryzen 7 generation CPU.
Reading the reply above from Gray2233 the Ryzen 7 5800X3D might be a good shout, but can I go higher than that?

I might just sort out the CPU whilst I wait for the silly season on the 50xx GPU's to calm down a bit.

First time poster. Be gentle with me.

Cheers,

Ideally a 9800X3D, but a 7800X3D wouldn’t be a bad choice. Next up a 5800X3D but you’d still be a quite GPU top heavy.
Would that 9800X3D fit in the same socket?

Edit: Seems not - looking at the 9800, that's an AM5 whilst the 5800X3D is AM4. Presumably you can't stick an AM5 chip into an AM4 socket.

The ryzen 5800x3d is the best upgrade on am4 but unfortunately it's no longer available as far as I know there's the 5700x3d which is still available both are good for gaming fo you use your pc just for gaming ?

Thank you Alex. Gaming and photo editing / office work.

It's more than powerful enough for the office stuff, and still plenty okay for the photos. It's just the side gaming I want to punch up a bit as I built this thing just before Covid and it's starting to feel the strain now and is unable to run the newer games with higher settings. Cyberpunk is sitting in my Steam library still unplayed until I get an upgrade.

Looking at comparisons it's looking like the 5700X3D isn't too much of a boost over what I have - will it really be worth it you think?

I think someone here mentioned looking at used CPU's so I might have to look and see if I can find a 5800x3D, they're going for around the £320 mark on auciton sites.

You can pick up a 5700x3d for a lot less and it's not that much slower, definitely would recommend it over the 5800.

Also what res are you playing at as that may push towards a gpu upgrade being the better option even with the current cpu as you could be limited by your gpu and so not really see that much of an improvement upgrading your cpu.

How would the 5700x3d compare against, say, a 5800x? Would it be much of a muchness?

Dont pay £320 for a used 5800x3d. That's a complete ripoff. I bought mine brand new at £340.

The going rate is about £200 on the members market on here.

Buy a 5700x3d if you are looking for one last upgrade on AM4.

I saw a decent performance improvement going 3700X to 5700X3D with a 6950XT. Average frames were higher but more importantly, lows were *much* higher and games where I saw occasional microstutter didn't have any at all with the X3D.

Performance difference between a 5700X3D and a 5800X3D is barely 10%, so if the price difference is within a similar range, go with a 5800X3D as its the best you'll get out of AM4. Otherwise, 5700X3D. I went with the latter because at the time there were some very good deals on the 5700X3D and a 5800X3D (comparing new prices at the time) was about 25% more expensive.

Okay, thanks for the head's up. ...and thanks to others that have posted as well.
Looking on CPUbenchmark, I can see that its saying the 5700X3D is only 6.9% slower than the 5800X3D, so I'll grab one of those today - I can see them around the £230 mark which is better for my wallet.

I'm playing at 1440p at the moment, but would be nice to have the headroom to go 4k at some point in the next year or two, but may be looking at a full build refresh by that point anyway.

I upgraded to a 5700x3d and it's a much smoother experience. In games that actually have good engines for utilizing the cpu i.e not ue5, cpu usage is higher and more normal. Played Indiana Jones after the upgrade and it's working great now. Was bottlenecked on it before with the 3700x.
